Position Description
The Laboratory Technician, reporting to the Team Leader and/or Resource Technologist, collects, receives, accessions and sorts specimens for testing. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for and performs a variety of laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of a Lead, Laboratory Technician. The position supports a 24 hour/7 days a week operation working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Laboratory Technician will work in Cytogenetics within the division of Genome Diagnostics.
Here's what you'll get to do
- Practice and perform a variety of laboratory procedures with accuracy and efficiency in accordance with the policies, processes and procedures of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine.
- Maintain competence in the receiving, handling, processing, identification, recording, labeling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory testing.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to DPLM procedures.
- Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take appropriate corrective action and maintain documentation of laboratory equipment.
- Actively participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to meet DPLM objectives.
- Recognize unusual situations and reports immediately to an MLT.
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Recognize unsafe work practices, potential hazards and unusual occurrences in the work area.
- Assist in maintaining inventory control to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies.
- Maintain competency as a Laboratory Technician through participation in training and continuing education.
- Participate in special projects or other duties as assigned by an MLT, Resource Technologist or Team Leader.
- Follow all aspects of the Quality System.
Here's what you'll need
- Completion of high school (Ontario Secondary School diploma or equivalent).
- Certification or registration as a Laboratory Technician with the Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO) preferred.
- Minimum of 1-2 years' experience with lab systems and processes.
- Strong typing/data entry skills.
- Ability to be a team player.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Critical thinking skills.
- Attention to detail and high accuracy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable.
- Good manual dexterity and visual interpretation skills.
- Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.
