KMB Law is seeking a Junior Employment Law Associate with 0 - 3 years of law firm experience. The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented and able to demonstrate strong communication skills along with the desire to grow over the long term. Position Overview:
The Junior Employment Law Associate will assist with a variety of substantive, complex, and routine legal activities and report to the Head of the Labour/Employment Department.
This non-remote position will be located at our head office in Mississauga or in our Burlington office.
The ideal candidate will advise mainly employer clients on all matters of employment and labour law, human rights law, and employment litigation (including trials, hearings, appeals, summary trials, and summary judgment motions). The ideal candidate will have experience or familiarity in civil litigation, employment standards and practices, wrongful dismissal, human rights and accommodation, occupational health and safety, and drafting and reviewing documents.
Responsibilities include, among others:
- Providing immediate and/or long term advice on labour/employment matters.
- Managing own set of litigation files (from start to finish).
- Working closely with other lawyers as co-counsel on court and tribunal proceedings.
- Drafting contracts, policies, investigations, correspondence, settlements, restrictive covenants, compensation plans, and other documents as needed, related to labour/employment matters, occupational health and safety, human rights
- Preparing draft materials and/or all materials required for discoveries and other advocacy opportunities.
- Conducting or assisting on discoveries, motions, applications and trials or arbitrations.
- Communicating with all parties that form part of the caseload.
- Liaison with other practice groups with duties related to client relationship management and firm marketing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience:
The following would be an asset:
- 0 -3 years of employment law experience, or civil litigation experience.
- Strong Knowledge of civil procedure and practice.
- In-court experience, in person and virtually.
- Drafted claims, defences, applications, motions, affidavits, factums, and other litigation documents.
- Mediation experience.
- Experience working with expert witnesses.
- Experience preparing clients for hearings and examinations.
- Experience using legal software and other practice-based software such as WestLaw, CanLII, Case Center, Caselines and other litigation assistance software.
- Experience with all word processing tools including Microsoft Office, advanced PDFs.
