Position Overview
The HSE Coordinator at BTG Group of Companies plays a pivotal role in supporting field operations by implementing and maintaining the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs. This position ensures compliance with internal HSE policies and Alberta regulatory requirements, delivers and tracks employee training, and promotes a strong safety culture. The HSE Coordinator reports directly to the VP, Upstream Operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Training and Compliance
- Championing a strong safety culture by a visible field presence, engaging directly with front workers, and fostering open communication to promote safe behaviors and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and deliver HSE training programs for employees, including onboarding and refreshers.
- Maintain and update the training matrix, ensuring all training requirements are met and documented in DATS.
- Track online training compliance and provide regular status reports to Management.
- Administer and update the HSE training database using DATS.
2. Incident and Hazard Reporting
- Ensure all incidents—including injuries, equipment damage, vehicle accidents, near misses, and environmental events—are reported in DATS within 24 hours or as soon as reasonably possible.
- Monitor, trend, and report on Hazard IDs, Near Misses, and Opportunities; provide monthly summaries to management.
- Support claims management and modified work processes in collaboration with WCB.
3. Audit and Inspection Support
- Conduct field, facility, and personnel audits to monitor compliance with the HSE Management System.
- Work with operations leadership to develop and track corrective actions for audit findings.
- Maintain a regional action item log for follow-ups and non-incident HSE items.
- Assist with contractor evaluations and compliance tracking using ComplyWorks.
4. Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain organized and up-to-date safety documentation including FLHAs, meeting minutes, and emergency response plans (ERPs).
- Prepare materials and schedule monthly HSE review with the field leadership team.
- Co-chair the Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and support quarterly meeting coordination and documentation.
5. Program Administration
- Oversee PPE inventory for the region, ensuring availability and cost control.
- Coordinate and lead monthly safety meetings.
- Ensure contractor safety management requirements are met through ComplyWorks.
- Monitor and support the company’s Be Safe working-alone check-in system to ensure field personnel are following lone worker protocols.
Qualifications
- 10-15 years of experience in a Health & Safety role, preferably within oil and gas operations.
- Promotes and coaches the workforce in behavioral-based safety.
- Certificate or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent combination of education and experience would be an asset.
- Solid understanding of Alberta OH&S legislation, Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) processes, and industry best practices.
- Proficiency in safety platforms including DATS, Muddy Boots, ComplyWorks, CMDS, and Be Safe.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize effectively and travel regionally as required.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $130,000.00-$160,000.00 per year
