The Mustard Seed is a certified Best Christian Workplace and humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty throughout Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services – food, clothing, and shelter, and is now increasing our support services – health & wellness centers, education, and employment coaching, as well as permanent supportive housing to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Type: Fixed-Term less than 3 months

Expected Start: July 7, 2025

Expected End: September 22, 2025
Schedule: 8-hour shifts, Sunday to Thursday nights, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
Reporting to: Shelter Manager
Location: Women's Shelter, Downtown Calgary

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be the first point of contact for participants seeking support, providing excellent service with dignity, kindness, and equity.
  • Respond promptly to individuals in crisis, employing de-escalation skills and assisting in exploring healthy alternatives.
  • Enforce participant suspensions when necessary.
  • Assist with daily meal programs.
  • Utilize case management tools to help shelter/drop-in participants work on short-term and long-term housing-related goals.
  • Use a person-centered approach to encourage guests to seek resources and services aligned with their goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with the team, including volunteers and other visitors.
  • Maintain strict privacy and confidentiality standards as outlined by FOIP and the Health Information Act.
  • Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate initiative and critical thinking in assessing and supporting participants.
  • Practice conflict resolution and facilitate reconciliatory conversations.
  • Ensure a safe, clean environment for adult guests.
  • Participate in staff training, attend meetings, and engage in regular one-on-one sessions with your supervisor.
  • Collect data and maintain accurate records using FDARP, including incident reports.
  • Respect proper boundaries with participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with a marginalized population.
  • Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate.
  • A strong passion for ending homelessness in Alberta.
  • Ability to follow organizational protocols of front-line programs to completion.
  • Experience in case management and advocacy is considered an asset.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to manage shifting priorities.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
  • A strong desire to work with a marginalized and vulnerable population.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position involves working in a challenging and potentially volatile environment where you may encounter racial slurs, name-calling, and derogatory comments from community members. It requires resilience, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to maintain professionalism and composure in the face of adversity. Training and support will be provided to ensure your safety and well-being.
  • Moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, and carrying may be required.
  • The position often involves a fast-paced environment and requires mental effort to analyze information and problem-solve.
  • Varied mental and emotional effort, including responding appropriately to intense situations and providing conflict resolution.
  • This position requires the training in usage of a two-way radio communications, MS Office based computer programming, HMIS database system, FDARP, FOIP, First Aid, NVCI, and Safe Talk

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

  • An overnight premium is provided for all overnight shifts to recognize and compensate for the unique demands of working during these hours.
