SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Department Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Department Manager with the supervision and operation of the department and its team of employees.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
- Assist the Department Manager with the supervision of clerks. This includes giving feedback to employees and directing the work.
- Assist the Department Manager with ordering, merchandizing, and customer service.
- Provide training to department employees on policies and procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service by advising customers on selections and ensuring that customers get the products they need.
- Ensure the department is tidy and well stocked at all times. Build displays, stock merchandise, rotate products in accordance with expiry dates, and trim produce to ensure freshness, if applicable. Ensure price tags are accurate, and continually face the department.
- Maintain proper cooler rotation and perform cooler maintenance in accordance with standards, if applicable.
- Receive incoming deliveries, review invoice accuracy, and inspect products to ensure they meet our quality standards.
- Provide feedback to the Department Manager on ways to improve the department and customer service.
- Report to the Department Manager any employee performance issues.
- Maintain a safe and positive work environment for customers and staff.
- Participate in Manager’s meetings when required.
- Part of the Manager on Duty rotation schedule when needed, which includes training on front end POS system. • Other duties and responsibilities as required.
Customer Service:
- Serves as a role model in providing excellent customer service.
- Interact with customers to understand what they want and how satisfied they are with the merchandise.
- Address and resolve customer service problems, with assistance from the Department Manager for more serious matters.
Inventory, Ordering, Pricing and Budgeting:
- Assist in-store inventory control including routine counts, stock rotation, new product selection, and manager specials to reduce overstock.
- Approve invoices for payment and enter them into the department budget spreadsheet under the supervision of the Department Manager.
- Monitor inventory turn targets and margins at the store, report any concerns to the Department Manager.
Merchandising:
- Build attractive and creative displays to highlight current promotional products, high-volume, and high-margin products.
- Build displays to promote flyer promotions, following instructions from the Category Manager.
- Coordinate with other Departments to cross-merchandise throughout the store with promotional products and in-store specials.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- A solid understanding of natural foods grocery products, organic produce, the organic farming industry, and the operation of a specialized department.
- A solid team builder and team player who can work both as a leader and a team member.

- A good listener and strong communicator who is able to interact effectively with all types of people.
- Strong problem solving and conflict management skills.
QUALIFICATIONS: • A Grade 12 diploma with at least 2 years of experience working in a retail setting, preferably in the grocery sector. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. • An interest, background, or work experience in the natural foods industry would be an asset. • A solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with Blush Lane software systems would be an asset. • Must be able to frequently lift 40-50 pounds
