Foreperson Concrete Crew - (6-Month Contract)
Accountabilities
The Town of Antigonish Public Works Department (PWD) has an opening for a Working Foreperson – Six (6) Months Term. The position is a contract, full-time employment, subject to probationary review.
The successful applicant will work under the direct supervision of the Manager of Public Works (or designate) and will lead labour crews of approximately five employees, as assigned. This position involves operating a wide range of Public Works equipment and training others in its safe and effective use. Preference will be given to candidates with experience operating excavators and performing concrete-related work. Additional experience with equipment such as backhoes, wheel loaders, street sweepers, salt trucks, snowplows, and sidewalk plows is also considered an asset.
As a Working Foreperson, you will support regular municipal system operations and assist with equipment maintenance tasks. You will be responsible for ensuring your own safety and that of your co-workers, while maintaining compliance with all applicable Provincial Occupational Health and Safety regulations. Skills, Capabilities and Experience
The successful candidate must have a Grade 12 education (or equivalent) and a strong understanding of workplace safety requirements commonly encountered in Public Works operations. This includes knowledge of safe practices related to the installation of concrete sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
Candidates must be capable of operating equipment used in municipal services and performing tasks such as municipal mainline and service lateral repairs, hydrant and water valve maintenance, sanitary sewer collection, street and sidewalk repairs, and snow and ice control.
In addition, the successful candidate will:
- Lead daily staff activities by providing on-site oversight and ensuring safety compliance under the direction of the Manager.
- Complete hazard assessments, traffic control plans, confined space permits, and other safety documentation to support a safe work environment.
- As directed by the Manager, assign tasks, provide guidance to staff, and help uphold department policies.
- Operate within the framework of the Collective Agreement to ensure fair and efficient resource use.
- Coordinate with other Town departments, government agencies, utilities, contractors, and service providers, as required.
- Assist with the creation and maintenance of departmental records and reports.
- Assess equipment needs, ensure proper maintenance is performed, and confirm that staff are trained in the safe operation of all equipment.
- Provide hands-on support to union staff to help ensure timely and effective task completion.
Preference will be given to applicants with three (3) or more years of experience performing the duties listed above.
A valid Nova Scotia Class 3 Driver’s License is required, as well as the ability to obtain and maintain a Nova Scotia Environment Operator Certification.
You should also have the following courses (or willing to train on employment):
- First Aid/CPR,
- Trenching,
- Traffic Control Person,
- Fall Arrest,
- Temporary Workplace Signage,
- Confined Space,
- And/or any other heavy equipment courses.
Salary and benefits
Pay is competitive and is established through our Collective Agreement and IBEW Local 1928. Hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
