Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial Family Law Associate to join our growing legal team. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated lawyer who is ready to take the next step in their career and manage their own files with autonomy, while benefiting from the support and resources of an established firm. The Family Lawyer is expected to have experience overseeing their own family law files.
The Family Lawyer will work closely with clients to provide legal advice, represent them in court, and ensure their rights are protected throughout the legal process.
Responsibilities
- Manage and advance a full range of family law matters, including divorce, child custody, support, property division, and related proceedings.
- Draft and review legal documents including family law pleadings, motions, conference materials, financial statements, with precision and attention to detail.
- Negotiate settlements on behalf of clients to achieve favorable outcomes while minimizing conflict.
- Confidently advocate for clients in and outside of the courtroom
- Represent clients in court hearings and mediations, advocating for their best interests.
- Maintain excellent client communication and service
- Contribute to the firm’s collaborative and entrepreneurial culture
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Minimum 3 years of experience practicing family law in Ontario
- Legal aid certificate is preferred but not required.
- Preference will be given to applicants with their own existing book of clients.
- Strong research skills with proficiency in using legal research databases such as CanLii and WestLaw.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with compassion and professionalism.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in managing multiple cases simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage files from intake to resolution
- Strong knowledge of Ontario family law and civil procedure.
- Experience with legal software (e.g., Leap, Divorcemate, Microsoft Office).
