Equine/Large Animal Surgeon, Two-Year Term


The University of Saskatchewan is seeking a dedicated skilled Large Animal Surgeon (Equine

and Food Animal) to join our surgical team. This is a full-time two-year term position, during which additional tenure-track positions may become available for application. Primary responsibilities include clinical service, teaching undergraduate DVM students, and the supervision of interns and residents. After-hours coverage is an expectation and is shared amongst the team. The successful candidate will be expected to perform emergency and elective surgeries (orthopedic and soft tissue); provide quality pre-and post-operative care; and be able to communicate effectively, work collegially, and collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds.

The Veterinary Medical Centre at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) is a state-of-the-art facility servicing western Canada as an AVMA and AAHA accredited hospital and referral centre. Equipment and diagnostic enhancements include a CT scanner, standing MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, linear accelerator with SRT and IMRT capabilities. Advanced surgical equipment includes portable C-arm fluoroscopy, minimally invasive equipment, vessel sealing device, and an operating microscope.

The WCVM is western Canada’s regional college of veterinary medicine and is part of a comprehensive academic health sciences group on the university campus, with access to facilities including the Canadian Light Source and the Biomedical Beamline and Saskatchewan Centre for Cyclotron Sciences. Candidates must have a DVM degree or equivalent, an advanced postgraduate degree (MSc or PhD), be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or have completed an ACVS registered residency program at the time of appointment, and be eligible for licensure with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association. Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (DECVS) are welcome to apply. Evidence of training and experience in equine and food animal surgery, case management, and effective classroom teaching is a prerequisite. Special consideration will be given to candidates with additional training and experience in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Salary bands for the 2025-2026 academic year are as follows:

Assistant Professor: $110,489 to $131,909; Associate Professor: $131,909 to $153,329; and Professor $153,329 to $178,319.
