Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Planning, the Environmental Planner is responsible and accountable for the review and management of municipal plan input and review files including:

  • Official Plan Reviews and Updates, Secondary Plans, Comprehensive Zoning By-law Reviews and Updates, and Subwatershed Studies
  • Planning Act applications including Official Plan Amendments, Zoning By-law Amendments, Plans of Subdivision and Condominium, and Complex Site Plans and Development Permits
  • Subwatershed Impact Studies, Environmental Implementation Reports and other technical studies
  • Niagara Escarpment Plan Amendments
  • Environmental Assessments

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing files, coordinating technical reviews and preparing correspondence, reports and recommendations
  • Providing expert advice and acting as the technical review coordinator for the preparation of expert planning and technical teams’ advice and opinions on behalf of Conservation Halton at the Ontario Land Tribunal and Joint Board Hearings
  • Participating in corporate and inter-agency projects and studies that might be impacted by Conservation Halton’s policies
  • Supporting special projects or policy planning initiatives
  • Preparing staff reports/memos on complex development matters for senior management and the Conservation Halton Board
  • Responding to planning and development inquiries from a broad range of stakeholders including applicants, consultants, municipal and agency staff, and members of the public

Your Qualifications

  • A degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies/ Sciences, or a related degree, combined with 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Working knowledge of the Planning Act, Provincial Planning Statement, Conservation Authorities Act, Environmental Assessment Act and other related environmental/Provincial legislation, plans and policies
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent strategic thinking, dispute resolutions, problem solving, analytical, negotiation and organizational skills
  • Experience developing, fostering and sustaining effective and positive relationships, both internal and external to the organization
  • Ability to successfully present complex ideas to diverse groups
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical reports and drawings, and relate them to Conservation Halton policies and objectives
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize various perspectives while providing a fair and consistent application of Conservation Halton planning and regulatory policy
  • Full membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is preferred or, alternatively, candidate member/eligible to become a member of OPPI
