Reporting to the Operations Manager, this position is a member of the team responsible for the day-to-day lab tech duties for the Culinary Arts & Professional Food Studies Department. The Educational Laboratory Technologist II provides assistance in the food labs. This position will assist with lab set up, event coordination, cooking for events and facilitation of lab operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist instructional staff in setting up and dismantling demonstrations
- Assist instructional staff in maintaining lab sanitation standards and inventory control
- Record and maintain inventory control on lab equipment and supplies
- Requisition and receive lab supplies
- Coordinate lab maintenance with procurement and instructional staff
- Coordinate product utilization in all food service outlets (One World, Ernest’s. Fresh Express and the Artisanal market)
- Assist with student competitions and department events
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- General culinary knowledge including knife skills, inventory controls and sanitation guidelines
- Attention to detail and accuracy of kitchen duties
- Ability to solve problems and provide solutions
- Knowledge of computers, including being comfortable learning new software
- Ability to work and perform in a continuously changing work environment
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Qualifications:
- Completion of high diploma or equivalent
- Red Seal Journeyman certificate in the cook trade or equivalent
- Certification in baking and pastry arts and/or professional meat cutting is an asset
- Food Handler's certificate or equivalent
- 2-3 years’ directly related experience in the food service industry
- Experience in a large institutional food service setting preferred
- Detailed knowledge of all Food Service guidelines, Food Handling Safety and Sanitation, and HACCP
- General knowledge of Food Safety Regulations; WHMIS standards; NAIT purchasing policies; Occupational Health and Safety guidelines
- Equivalencies may be considered, combination of education and experience
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $51,138.62 to $69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Ed Lab Tech II)
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
