The Opportunity

SAIT is seeking a visionary and strategic leader to join our academic division and Teaching and Learning Commons as the Director, Teaching Excellence. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Teaching & Learning, this is a unique opportunity to shape the future of teaching and teaching development across our polytechnic, fostering a culture of innovation, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
As a key member of the academic leadership team, you will guide the development and implementation of teaching excellence frameworks, lead faculty development initiatives, and encourage cross-institutional synergies. You’ll work closely with academic leaders, faculty, and external partners to ensure the delivery of industry-aligned, student-centered education that meets the highest standards of quality and relevance.
This role oversees a portfolio that ensures teaching and course development excellence across SAIT’s schools is consistently integrated, accessible, and effective in strengthening the student experience. You will mentor and empower Academic leaders to ensure support for faculty development, course delivery, digital learning, and scholarly activity is needs driven, evidence based and aligned to best practices. Working closely with the Director Academic Quality you will create a service culture within the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) that is inclusive, evidence-based, and aligned with SAIT’s FIRST principles.
The Role
- Develop and drive institutional strategies for scholarly activity, faculty development, digital learning, and course development
- Empower the Academic Leaders and team members to maintain and enhance teaching and learning excellence, in partnership with representatives from each School
- Promote experiential and peer-led faculty development across six workstreams
- Oversee the development of SAIT’s Teaching and Learning Framework aligned to SAIT’s Capabilities framework and the Strategic Plan
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to a high-performing team
- Manage all aspects of the employee lifecycle including hiring, mentoring, performance development, and offboarding
- Foster relationships with key partners and coordinate feedback into strategic planning
- Liaise with academic schools and departments to ensure consistent application of policies, procedures and application of the collective agreement
- Influence organizational change management activities to ensure success and sustainment of change initiatives.
- Represent SAIT in external forums and stay current on sector trends and regulations
- Oversee operational management and ensure accurate, accessible teaching excellence data
- Collaborate on institutional technology implementations and AI integration in teaching and learning to support academic needs
- Evaluate performance data to drive continuous improvement whilst tracking progress and value add across the career continuum of teaching development of faculty.
- Encourage agile learning experience design and expand academic capacity for innovation
- Promote reflective practice and continuous improvement in course design and delivery
- Promotion professional development for academic staff and faculty in relations to course development, teaching practice, and research
- Create recognition structures for faculty engagement in professional development
- Lead SAIT’s Teaching Excellence Awards and build a reward and recognition structure for teaching and support for learning.
- Support space development to ensure the TLC becomes the go-to hub for faculty support on teaching and learning.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in education or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution
- Minimum five years of leadership experience in faculty development, curriculum design, or digital learning
- Proven track record in educational research and scholarship of teaching and learning
- Deep familiarity with institutional structures, accreditation, and governance is strongly preferred
- Experience in implementing new initiatives that align with institutional strategies in a collaborative and supportive manner
- Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Demonstrate excellent team management, while focusing on employee skill development and opportunities for advancement
- Demonstrated ability to empower direct reports and influence and collaborate with peers and diverse partners and clients
- Experience in project and process management, budgeting, and business planning
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Dedicated to fostering respectful, diverse, and inclusive workplaces
- Experience implementing initiatives aligned with institutional strategies
