Position Overview:
Reporting directly to the President of Velocity Truck Centres Canada, the Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive EH&S strategy aligned with Velocity Truck Centres' business goals and the Velocity Vehicle Group's global safety framework. This role will be a critical part of the Canadian Executive team and will partner closely with senior and branch leadership, operations, and cross-functional teams to champion a culture of safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a national EH&S strategy for heavy truck sales, service, parts, and fleet operations, aligned with our global EH&S Management System.
- Partner with the Canadian Senior Leadership Team to assess safety risks, establish KPIs, and execute proactive mitigation strategies.
- Drive both short- and long-term goals focused on preventing serious injuries and fatalities while embedding HOP (Human & Organizational Performance) principles into our safety culture.
Program Development & Implementation
- Oversee the design and implementation of EH&S programs, policies, procedures, and training to standardize practices while addressing local needs.
- Ensure EH&S training content is current, compliant, and reflective of operational realities.
- Lead emergency preparedness, incident response, and business continuity initiatives across all Canadian locations.
- Champion initiatives to achieve and maintain COR certification nationally.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all provincial and federal EH&S legislation, including Alberta OHS, BC Workers Compensation Act, WHMIS, TDG, and other relevant regulations.
- Lead inspections, internal audits, and event-based learning initiatives, ensuring timely corrective actions and continuous risk reduction.
- Partner with Legal, HR, and Operations on claims management, liability mitigation, and incident-related litigation.
Culture & Training
- Embed safety as a core organizational value, fostering a culture of care, accountability, and employee engagement at all levels.
- Design and facilitate effective onboarding and training programs that build EH&S awareness and competency.
- Encourage employee participation in safety improvement efforts, recognizing frontline staff as key contributors to identifying solutions.
Data & Analytics
- Monitor leading and lagging indicators, using data to identify trends, root causes, and performance gaps.
- Provide regular reporting and insights to leadership to drive data-informed decisions and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional safety designation such as CRSP, CSP, or equivalent preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive EH&S leadership experience, ideally within transportation, heavy equipment, or dealership environments.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian occupational health and safety legislation and workers' compensation systems across multiple provinces.
- Proven success developing and implementing safety programs that reduce incidents and drive cultural change.
- Experience leading WCB claims management and return-to-work planning.
- Strong leadership, communication, and influencing skills with the ability to build trust across all levels of the organization.
- Analytical mindset with experience using EH&S software and reporting tools.
- Comfortable working in shop environments and traveling to locations across Canada as needed.
