Customer & Energy Data Scientist Lead

What you'll do
electrification of transportation. This role will support BC Hydro’s energy load forecasting, distribution planning, rate design,
product development, policy development, and electric vehicle charging operations as we plan for and serve growing
demand from adoption of electrified transportation in BC.
The evolution of large-scale, multi-source, high complexity data from the implementation of an enterprise analytics
foundation along with a diverse range of internal BC Hydro and external data applications has resulted in a need for a high
degree of technical aptitude and communications ability in leading population-scale analyses and machine-learning
analytics. This role engages in complex analytical assignments beginning with data infrastructure and data quality
assessment, through model prototyping, identification, and validation.
- Requires a deep understanding of many aspects of the electric utility business, customers, and market context including:
requirements.
- Works with business groups in BC Hydro to convert and unify customer and energy data to deliver data-driven and
deferral, or avoidance of capital investment and improved energy planning resulting in cost savings for stakeholders and
improvements to customer satisfaction, service reliability, and personnel safety.
- Leads and plans residential EV load monitoring activities using a variety of statistical models, machine learning and AI
side management, infrastructure investments, etc.
- Analyzes field metering data, plant production / operating data, specific end-use technology performance parameters and
and temporal granularity and understand the effect of underlying assumptions on the deliverables of interest.
- Provides technical leadership and mentorship to a small team of data scientists/analysts, consultants, or technical support
- Routinely participates in senior management initiatives, and provides expert quantitative- and analytics-based advice and
- Develops and evaluates cost/benefit studies for implementation of advanced analytics to support business decision
- Maintains a high level of expertise in analytical systems and software to ensure BC Hydro optimizes the use of existing
- Works with business sponsors, technology and data security and privacy personnel to guide implementation of any long-
- Develops data security and privacy procedures for analytical environments accessed by users throughout BC Hydro,
breaches.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, economics or other quantitative discipline.
- 10 to 12 years’ experience in analytical roles developing statistical data modelling, data mining, and visualization
metering data
- Expert level programming skills (e.g. Python, SQL, R, SAS)
- Expert level database skills (i.e. SQL database querying languages)
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work optimally with all job groups and levels
- Intellectual curiosity to explore and find creative ways to solve problems
- Ability to communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Formal project management experience and/or training
- Strong understanding of multiple areas of the electric utility business such as distribution, customer service, energy
- Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and manage stakeholder expectations.
