The Child Enrichment Centre is looking for a cook who will prepare and provide nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks for the Child Enrichment Centre community in the safe and clean environment of the Centre kitchen. The prepared meals will meet 2/3 of the daily nutritional requirements, as stated in the Canada’s Food Guide. The Cook must work as a team member with the Centre staff.
The Centre Cook reports to the Centre Director or in his/her absence, the delegate.
We are open all year round, just closed for Stat holidays and 2 Staff Professional Development Days a year. These are always the Friday before Labour Day and the Friday before Family Day.
Shift:
- Monday to Friday (7:30pm - 4:00pm) 45 minutes break (30 minutes unpaid, 15minutes paid)
- 40 hours/week guaranteed, Monday to Friday. NO evening or weekend shifts
- Paid staff meeting
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Come up with healthy and appropriate weekly menus to be posted in each room for parental viewing
- Maintain and order kitchen supplies
- Prepare meals in compliance with children’s allergies and sensitivities, and when possible, their cultural or lifestyle practices/decisions
- Inform the Centre Director of potential issues or existing problems with the Centre kitchen (budget, menu planning, food preparation, order food, kitchen equipment)
- Wash dishes and equipment as required
- Grocery shopping if needed
- Attend staff meetings and other important meetings, as required
- Keep the kitchen in a clean, hygienic condition, and in compliance with and exceeding health and safety standards
- Submit all invoices/receipts to the Centre Director in a timely manner
- Help the kitchen achieve a satisfactory annual health inspection
- Sound knowledge of licensing and health and safety requirements
- Personable with staff, families and children
- Plans a 4-week seasonal, rotating menu based on Canada’s Food Guide and the philosophy of the Centre.
- Menus must be posted in each room for parental viewing and sent out by email.
- Prepares adequate amount of and variety of all meals and snacks.
- Prepares suitable lunches and snacks for children and staff for field trips, upon request.
Qualifications:
- Certificate in Culinary Arts from a recognized college or university
- Previous experience in meal preparation and serving of large groups
- Caring and friendly towards, staff, children and parents
- Current Provincial Safe Food Handling Certificate
- Effective Time Management Skills
- Valid Standard First Aid and Level “C” CPR
- Valid Calgary Criminal record check with vulnerable sector search
- Sound knowledge of licensing, accreditation, and health and safety requirements
