POSITION SUMMARY
The controller position reports directly to the CFO and is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including but not limited to:
- Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
- Responsible for the management of the company accounting/ERP system
- Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and financial policies and procedures.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of period end processes to facilitate External Reporting functions.
- Provide additional details and information to internal and external partners to allow timely and accurate release of financial data
- Ensure that accounts payable processes are followed, and invoices are paid in a timely manner
- Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
- Ensure that customer invoices are issued in a timely manner following internal control processes and that accounts receivable are collected promptly
- Ensure that periodic (monthly) bank reconciliations are completed and reviewed
- Ensure that periodic (monthly) balance sheet reconciliations are completed and reviewed
- Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
- Maintaining finance contracts for capital and operational purposes including monitoring cash flow, reserve levels and anticipated cash requirements
- Signing authority on bank accounts and administrative responsibilities related to managing access of staff members to banking and related financial information
- Ensuring appropriate banking arrangements are maintained to support active and anticipated operational needs of the organization
- Oversee Corporate Credit Card programs and provide maintenance of card limits and ensure adherence to corporate credit card spending policies
- Maintain the chart of accounts
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
- Maintenance of records related capital assets and related financing.
- Issue timely and complete financial statements
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations (KPI’s)
- Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
- Participate in the production of the annual budget and forecasts
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
- Provide for a system of management cost reports
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
- Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Supervising accounting staff and ensuring compliance with company policies as issued from time to time
- Maintain accurate records of capital assets including timing of capitalizations, maintenance of amortization schedules and useful life calculations including annual reviews of accounting policies related to the assets, as well as ensuring additions and disposals are handled in a timely and appropriate manner
- Supervise Senior Accountants, Accountants, Junior Accountants, AP and/or AR staff, and analysts. Balancing of direct reports and duties of the Controller may change from time to time as the needs of the organization change.
- Compliance with quality and safety management requirements
- Occasional travel both inside and outside of Canada for business purposes (not to exceed 10%)
- Other duties as assigned or as may be required within the scope of these responsibilities
- Preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements that meet ASPE (Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises) requirements, complete with notes to the financial statements.
- Coordination of tax calculations for monthly and quarterly provisions;; and completion and timely filing of tax returns in relevant jurisdictions.
- Coordination of the development and maintenance of Power BI reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA designation
- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting/finance leadership roles.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and/or ASPE, as applicable.
- Experience with ERP systems and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and team management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in financial modeling and analysis.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
