Fast + Epp GmbH
$21 - $25 an hour
Vancouver, British Columbia

We’re looking for a Concept Lab Support Technician Co-op to join our Vancouver office. In this role, you’ll be responsible for project tasks in the Concept Lab such as preparing test samples, executing structural testing, filing project data, post-processing test results, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. If you’re drawn to innovative design, ambitious structures, and a workplace that values your well-being both inside and outside the office, we encourage you to apply!

At Fast + Epp, our core purpose is to advance structural design and propel architectural imagination. We strive to manifest this core purpose in the designs we produce, the community we have created, and the professional development opportunities we provide for our staff. We’re looking for people who approach problems with a sense of curiosity and are not afraid to ask, “is there a better way to do this?” We want people who will bring diverse experiences and viewpoints to our team, those who love to collaborate with others and understand they have something to learn from everyone they meet. We’re searching for individuals who are honest, reliable, and good listeners.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Correspond clearly and concisely with design team members and external parties as required.
  • Monitor time allocated for design tasks and advise of status.
  • Assist in the design, setup, calibration, and validation of test fixtures and experimental apparatus.
  • Support instrumentation setup including strain gauges, load cells, and displacement sensors.
  • Document observations, anomalies, and results during and after testing.
  • Understand and follow test procedures from ASTM standards and bespoke test designs.
  • Post-process test data and produce test reports for approval.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, coordinate calibration schedules, and report maintenance issues.
  • Follow best practices and wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) for each task.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in lab workflow, documentation, and testing efficiency.
  • Support inventory tracking of materials, tools, and consumables required for lab operations.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and data handling protocols when working with proprietary or sensitive information.
  • Return all tools to the appropriate location and clear working areas at the end of each day.

How you fit into the team:

  • You will report to the Concept Lab Manager.

What you bring to the table:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical discipline;
Completed at least two years of study in a relevant program.
  • Must be eligible for co-op/internship placement through their academic institution.
  • Prior lab or hands-on mechanical experience (academic, project-based, or work experience).
  • Understanding of basic mechanical and structural principles, including stress, strain, and material behaviour.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada and ability to travel to the lab location daily.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with hand tools, power tools, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Basic data analysis skills; ability to interpret graphs and understand measurement units (e.g., load, displacement, stress, strain).
  • Experience with Excel and/or data acquisition software is an asset.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and test specifications.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills and willingness to ask questions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Commitment to safety practices and ability to follow lab protocols.
  • Physical ability to lift moderate loads, stand for extended periods, and perform hands-on technical work.
