The City of Orillia is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of CAD Technician in the Asset Management and Maintenance Division.


Reporting to the Manager of Asset Care or designate, the CAD Technician is responsible for maintaining CAD services, including new and archival as constructed drawings across the corporation. Strong organizational skills and an acute attention to detail will aid in drawing review, editing, and file conversions as requested. The CAD Technician will play an integral role in the maintenance, growth, and enhancement of the City’s drawings repository.


Candidates must possess a post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field (e.g., Civil Engineering Technology from an OACETT accredited college), and at least two years of experience in a civil engineering or related environment. This position requires proficiency with AutoDesk and excellent computer skills using MS Office Suite, together with other technical application software related to GIS and CMMS platforms.


The City of Orillia offers a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, and registration with the OMERS pension plan. The salary for this position is $75,641 to $88,489 based on a 40-hour work week.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Technician

Position Synopsis and Purpose

Reporting to the Manager of Asset Care or designate, the CAD Technician is responsible for CAD tasks as assigned, primarily using AutoDesk, and the conversion to maintain in GIS, using ESRI. Other duties will include the maintenance and accessibility of archived drawings and datasets. The CAD Technician will also be expected to: Source, acquire and collect materials for subject data, verify existing municipal data based on specifications provided, review and convert relevant available data sources, data entry of existing paper-based information, perform quality control checks on converted data, document specifications, procedures and/or completed work.

Administration

  • Produce and maintain corporate drawings, mapping and related geodatabase products using AutoDesk and ArcGIS Pro software. Products include CAD files, scanned drawings, maps, etc.
  • Maintain, update, and archive “As Constructed” drawings in accordance with record-keeping protocols.
  • Gather and analyze information from both internal and external sources, interfacing with ArcGIS and CityWide
  • Prepare municipal engineering plan/profile base plan drawings using AutoCAD Map3D or Civil 3D.
  • Review and audit drawings for precision, completeness, and adherence to standards.
  • Assist in the development of maintenance plans.
  • May be required to gather field data.

  • Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

Required Training

  • Training in Auto Desk, specifically AutoCAD Map 3D or Civil 3D.
  • Training in Interpretation of civil engineering drawings.

Minimum Qualifications

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Must have a minimum of a three (3) year Community College Diploma or Degree in a related field (e.g., Civil Technology or related field from an accredited institution)

Experience

  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years previous experience in a civil engineering, asset management, planning, or related environment.
  • Must possess a demonstrated proficiency with AutoDesk (AutoCAD Map 3D).
  • Must possess expertise in the interpretation of civil engineering and planning-related drawings.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability

  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, policies, and industry standards.
  • Oral and technical writing skills required to document and articulate standards, procedures, or reference materials.
  • Communicate effectively with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
  • Ability to handle multiple and competing priorities.
  • Possess strong attention to detail and precision.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting, standing, or walking. Work is conducted in a standard office environment with continual visual concentration required.

Position Requirements

  • Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • A current and acceptable Criminal Record Check is required prior to the commencement date.
  • Attendance at meetings, seminars and conferences as required.
  • Must have a high-speed internet connection and a proper workstation at a home location to enable remote work.

Preferred Qualifications

Education (degree/diploma/certifications - in addition to the above)

  • Education or Certifications associated with Asset Management will be considered an asset.
  • Certification as a Technologist, Technician or Applied Science Technician with O.A.C.E.T.T. will be considered an asset.

Experience (in addition to the above)

  • Experience with ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise) will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with PSD CityWide as an Asset Management and Maintenance platform will be considered an asset.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability (in addition to the above)

  • Knowledge and experience working with BIM’s will be considered an asset.
