Job Title: Boring Mill Operator

Position Summary:
The Boring Mill Operator is responsible for the accurate setup, operation, and maintenance of boring mills to produce precision components as per engineering specifications. This role requires strong attention to detail, commitment to quality, and adherence to safe machining practices in a custom mold manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
· Interpret engineering drawings and 3D models to plan machining operations.
· Set up and operate horizontal and/or vertical boring mills to perform 2D and rough machining on large components, cores, and cavities
· Select and install appropriate tooling, fixtures, and machine offsets.
· Perform in-process checks and verify part dimensions using precision measurement tools.
· Ensure machined parts meet tight tolerances and quality requirements.
· Conduct basic machine maintenance and troubleshoot issues as needed.
· Communicate effectively with programmers, leaders, and other team members regarding part setups, quality issues, or required adjustments.
· Record machining activities in job tracking systems or MES.
- Minimize waste and damage of tooling, inserts, and carbide
- Communicate with all internal team members when needed and to achieve end objectives.
- Participate in continuous improvement programs / training
· Support housekeeping and continuous improvement initiatives in the machining area
Required Qualifications:
· Minimum 3 years of experience operating large boring mills in a mold making or heavy machining environment.
· Ability to read and interpret detailed technical drawings and GD&T.
· Skilled in the use of calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision inspection tools.
· Familiarity with machining large components to tight tolerances.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining principles.
· Excellent communication with supervisors, co-workers and other department disciplines
· Ontario Secondary School Diploma
· Proficient with CNC Boring Mill Machining
· Proactive, problem-solving approach with a focus on high quality machine output
· Demonstrates drive and motivation for continuous improvement.
· Ability to work well with a wide range of people and cultures.
· Ability to thrive in a cross-functional environment with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with 5-axis boring mills or programmable controls (e.g., Heidenhain, Fanuc, Toshiba).
· Exposure to mold manufacturing or custom one-off component environments.
· Forklift or crane operation certification.
· Basic knowledge of CAM software or ability to interact with programmers.
· Machinist Certificate an asset
· Ability to solve problems through various tasks
Working Environment:
· Shop floor environment with large-scale machining equipment.
· Requires standing, lifting, and handling heavy parts with the assistance of overhead cranes.
· May involve extended hours or shift flexibility during high-demand periods.
· PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots required.

Machining Group (Driven by Supervisor, Owned by Team):
· Quote vs. Actual Performance (Machining) – Match or beat estimated machining hours and costs.
· Deadline Performance (Machining) – Deliver components according to scheduled milestones.
· Unattended Runtime Achievement – Maintain a minimum unattended machining ratio
· Quality Performance (Rework Rate) – Minimize rework through precision and process adherence.
· Housekeeping – Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and shop floor safety.
