Role Responsibilities

The Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team!

The Third-Party Liability (TPL) Unit is looking for a strong professional and team player to assist in recovering the Crown’s health care costs related to personal injury matters.

As a Claims Officer, you act on behalf of the Government of Alberta in recovering personal injury costs. Specifically, you work under the authority of the Crown’s Right of Recovery Act and assist in recovering the costs for health care that were the result of injuries suffered due to the wrongful act or omission of a third party.

You will actively pursue the recovery of health service costs incurred by the Crown of up to $75,000.00 on behalf of recipients injured due to the wrongdoing of third parties. You will do so in accordance with the Crown's Right of Recovery Act and regulations and pursuant to the ThirdParty Liability unit policies and procedures.

You will also collaborate with government departments (e.g., Alberta Justice), insurance companies across Canada and the United States, legal professionals, and members of the public.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards
Requirements:
•    University graduation (Insurance, Law, Medical claims) or in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalencies: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: 
•    1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
•    1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

The following knowledge or experiences are considered as assets:
•    Comprehensive understanding of personal injury principles and insurance law.
•    Strong planning, coordination, records management, and problem-solving skills.
•    Familiarity with legal terminology, lawsuit processes, and procedures.
•    Experience with insurance policies, personal injury claims, and legal statutes, including Crown’s Right of Recovery Act, Insurance Act, Limitations of Actions Act, and the Health Information Act.
•    Effective communications skills (written and oral) to collaborate effectively with colleagues and with internal and external stakeholders.
•    Strong critical thinking, negotiation skills, and attention to detail.
•    Ability to prioritize workload and cope with changing priorities and deadlines.
•    Organization and prioritization skills to balance multiple ongoing projects at one time and ability to meet tight timelines.

This competition is a temporary full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
