Job Description:
The Chair of Teaching Excellence and Innovation leads Learning and Teaching Services (LTS) in promoting and supporting the development of effective pedagogical skills, course design and development, and use of digital technologies that support the College’s strategic directions. The Chair does this through the development of strong partnerships across the College to position LTS as a resource for pedagogical leadership, support and innovation. The Chair fosters a dynamic and collaborative workplace and culture, inspires and empowers a talented and diverse team of professionals, and promotes and creates inclusive teaching and learning practices. The Chair will provide management functions and strategic leadership in the following areas:
- Development and management of faculty professional development in broad pedagogical areas, including but not exclusive to instructional skill, educational technology, intercultural learning, course design and development, and critical pedagogy;
- Advancement and application of pedagogical theory, effective teaching, learning theory, as applied to educational technologies, including advancement and integration of information literacy/knowledge navigation at the institutional, program and course levels;
- Ensuring the support and training of faculty and staff involved in teaching and learning across all campuses and modalities. This involves the identification of needs and the development of support programs, the implementation of those programs and their evaluation.
- Advancing programming, support and reflective practices related to course quality, including course and curriculum design, development, modes of delivery and student assessment;
- Leading the design of learning spaces for multiple modes of delivery;
- Proactively creating programming and initiatives responding to emergent needs; Disseminates and promotes scholarly and evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning, including opportunities to engage in educational scholarship;
- Oversite, direction and implementation of the College’s educational technology tools, including managing the Learning Management System;
- Project management of new academic initiatives identified in the Strategic and Business Plans
- Development of various resources and working across the College in the effective delivery of training related to these activities;
- Coordination of LTS activities and projects with academic departments, Information Technology Services, Student Services, Physical Resources, the Registrar’s Office, and Marketing.
Required Qualifications:
Education
Masters degree required in Education or relevant field;
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset
- Educational disciplines combined with strategic planning, business, project management, IT are preferred.
Experience
Minimum of nine (9) years experience required in a higher education environment, including 5 years of management experience in;
Experience in the following areas:
- Curriculum development
- Design, development and delivery of curriculum
- Teaching/instruction and preparation of teaching materials
- Instructional evaluation procedures in education and industry
- Adult learning and instructional design required for learning effectiveness
- Knowledge of the College educational structure and experience in the College environment;
- Knowledge of technology trends in education;
- Experience in human resource management, budgeting, project management, conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, marketing and developing partnership linkages;
- Ability to coordinate multiple and diverse activities;
- Providing, leading, or supporting educational development, or faculty support is required;
- Experience with directing, developing, and deploying new educational technologies is required;
- Experience with education trends and measures related to retention and success strategies in higher education environments;
- Ability to network and build partnerships to appropriately represent Algonquin at internal/external stakeholder meetings;
- Excellent presentation skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Teaching experience in higher education highly desirable;
- A strong working knowledge of Brightspace, and related educational technologies is essential.
