Description

The Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Chair appointment in Risk Management and Insurance at the level of Full Professor or Associate Professor with Tenure. Applications are encouraged from candidates who hold a PhD in Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Economics, Actuarial Sciences, or a closely related field; have a strong record of research publications in top outlets and have demonstrated success teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. The appointment will commence July 1, 2026, or at a mutually agreeable date.

The Chair in Insurance and Risk Management is supported by an endowment that was established in 1991 with donations from multiple donors across the insurance and risk management industries and matching grants from the Province of Alberta.

Haskayne is the only business school in Canada that is designated a Global Centre of Insurance Excellence (GCIE). The Chair will:

  • provide leadership for the continuing support and development of the Risk Management and Insurance concentration
  • work with internal and external stakeholders to promote the Risk Management and Insurance concentration.

Required Qualifications for All Candidates

  • A completed doctorate degree in risk management and insurance, finance, economics, actuarial science, or other closely related fields.
  • An outstanding record of research that demonstrates significant contributions to risk management and insurance. Areas of research may include any of the fields related to risk management and insurance, such as insurance economics, insurer operations, enterprise risk management, household finance, pensions and employee benefits, and actuarial science.
  • Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and supervise students.
  • Evidence of curriculum development and innovation in risk management education.
  • Proven ability to engage with industry and build relationships with the business community.

Required Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank

  • Publication record that includes multiple articles in top-tier peer-reviewed academic journals (e.g., FT50, AJG4*and/or top-tier Risk Management and Insurance journals).
  • Demonstrated success in securing research grants and external funding, acknowledging regional differences in access to external funding
  • Established record of graduate student supervision, preferably at the doctoral level.
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with academic and industry partners.
  • Demonstrated service contributions to the university and academic community.
  • Experience with outreach activities that connect academic research with industry practice.
  • Emerging reputation in the risk management and insurance field.

Required Qualifications for Full Professor Rank

  • Internationally recognized research profile with substantial publications in premier academic journals (e.g., FT50, AJG4*and/or top-tier Risk Management and Insurance journals).
  • Distinguished record of academic leadership and mentorship.
  • International reputation in risk management as evidenced by awards, appointments to editorial boards, leadership roles in professional organizations, or other recognitions.
  • Experience in graduate student supervision, including successful doctoral student completions.
  • Preferred qualifications (must meet some of these and demonstrate potential/interest in future engagement)
    o Proven success in raising significant external funding for research initiatives.
    o Demonstrated impact on industry practice.
    o Demonstrated success in developing programs that engage the business community.
    o Record of fostering collaborations across academic disciplines and with external partners
    o Demonstrated ability to organize events that facilitate academic and practitioner interaction.

The successful candidate will be offered a tenured academic appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level (commensurate with qualifications). The initial Chair appointment is a five-year term, and renewal is subject to demonstrated performance as it relates to the terms of reference for the Chair, which include leading research initiatives, enhancing curriculum, improving program marketing, fundraising, fostering collaborations, engaging the business community, organizing scholarly events, liaising with industry, teaching excellence, and student mentorship.
