Job Description

The City of Merritt is looking for an outgoing, people-oriented individual to join the Recreation and Facilities team as a casual Cashier.

Our Cashiers create a fun and memorable experience for people using City of Merritt recreation and leisure services by greeting them in a welcoming and friendly way. As the first point of contact for people accessing recreation services, you’ll handle point-of-sale transactions, assist people by providing accurate information in response to inquiries over the phone and in-person and take complaints. Cashiers are an integral part of the team and take pride in their work; they help orient new team members, assist with setting up for events, routine cleaning and opening or closing facilities they are assigned to. In addition, Cashiers reconcile payments and provide clerical support for the department’s activities.

Casual employees are scheduled on an as-needed basis to relieve employees who are on leaves, vacation, or during peak periods of increased workload; there are no regularly scheduled hours or guarantee of hours.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent along with experience providing customer service, taking point-of-sale payments, operating office equipment, following policies and procedures or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • With a courteous, outgoing and people-oriented demeanour, you work effectively in a team environment, greet customers, answer inquiries and handle a variety of interactions with the public.
  • With your strong attention to detail, you are able to receive money and issue change accurately and promptly and create and maintain clerical records.
  • You are comfortable operating office equipment and using computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR Certification
  • A valid BC Driver’s license (Class 5 preferred)

For new hires and those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, employment is conditional on a satisfactory police information check.

Additional Information

The rate of pay is set at $22.24 per hour (2025 rate) with a 14% in lieu of benefits and well-being benefits including access to the employee and family assistance plan (EAP) and exclusive perks program.

If you are a safety-minded individual with a strong work ethic and customer service orientation who takes pride in contributing to a team's success, we invite you to apply.

This position will be posted until Thursday, June 19, 2025 (4:00 pm); for full consideration, apply today!
