Description & Requirements
It's an exciting time to cover Canada's economy, which is at a critical juncture. US tariffs are hurting strategic export industries, spurring the country to seek stronger relationships with trading partners and to invest in large national projects. Decades of reliance on the US market and weak business investment are major challenges to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government and his ambitions for an economic transformation.Bloomberg’s Ottawa bureau is looking for an ambitious, curious and driven reporter who wants to tell the story of Canada's economy in a global context. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of economics and how growth is impacted by central banks, private-sector investment patterns, government and industry regulation. The right candidate will need to write fast and accurate coverage of key economic data and the Bank of Canada, and will play a key role in the bureau’s broader coverage of economic policy.
The right candidate will tackle stories at the nexus of money and power and be willing to dive into complex stories about trade, fiscal policy and other matters. This reporter will break news, develop relationships with key sources and deliver original analysis of economic data. As the Canadian economy is intricately linked with the rest of the world, the job involves collaborating with journalists across the globe.
You'll need: - Experience with economics coverage in a real-time news environment - An ability to read and interpret economic data and statistics - A strong desire to break news and build an extensive network of sources - The ability to work under deadline pressure - Eagerness to collaborate with teams and departments across the newsroom
