The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract, in accordance with the duties of this position. The successful candidate must provide their own CSA approved safety footwear.

This position is a summer contract (May – End of August). The hourly wage range for this position is $17.86 to $21.01. Scheduled shifts on weekdays and weekends with an average of 35 hours per week.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Municipal Law Enforcement, the By-Law Summer Student will provide exceptional customer service while completing patrols and issuing parking infraction notices. This position will assist the department with the collection of meter revenues.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Municipal Law Enforcement/Property Standards Officer with the collection of meter revenues.
  • Enforce the provisions of the Town of Midland parking bylaw.
  • Issue parking infraction notices.
  • Undertake vehicle, bike and foot patrols as required.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of parking equipment.
  • Help inventory parking lot infrastructure.
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety policies and procedures established by the Town of Midland.
  • Enforce the provisions of the Town of Midland clean yards bylaw.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
  • Currently between the ages of 15 – 30.
  • Experience in public relations, interpersonal skills to give information and respond to complaints.
  • Ability to deal with agitated and/or aggressive people.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office, and data entry.
  • Organizational skills to perform a variety of functions and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Knowledge and/or training in CPR, First Aid and WHMIS are assets.
  • Working knowledge of municipal by-law is an asset.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
  • Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing and a reliable vehicle is required.

Effort/Physical Demands

  • Physical demand requires standing, sitting, lifting, crouching and walking.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.

Working Conditions

  • Approved CSA safety boots must be purchased by students and worn at all times.
  • Staff shirts will be supplied by the Town and must be worn at all times.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends and special events.
  • Exposure to potentially emotionally charged situations.
