The Role
In Summer, performs landscaping, grounds, and equipment maintenance. In Winter, assists in grounds, facilities, and equipment maintenance, and works variable shifts and hours (which can include weekends) and extended shifts (8-10 hours) for snow removal. At all times, works according to regulations, legislation, policy, and safety standards.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs maintenance activities (e.g., cleans floors, windows, washrooms, other janitorial functions; moves furniture; repairs interior walls, trim, and fixtures; changes light bulbs).
  • Performs grounds maintenance and landscaping. Maintains and repairs landscape features (e.g., picnic tables, benches, garbage containers, recycling depots).
  • Maintains, inspects, and repairs permanent fences, and sets up and removes temporary fences.
  • Maintains, repairs, and ensures gate functioning (e.g., post holes, hinges, latches).
  • Maintains, paints, and replaces signs.
  • Controls and removes foreign objects, identifies and eliminates source, and reports to management. Removes garbage and sweeps.
  • Monitors and controls wildlife movement, with management.
  • Controls vegetation, trims hedges, and removes vegetation/debris from drainage ditches.
  • Operates aviation radio and monitors frequency to maintain continuous contact with air traffic control and aviation traffic. Monitors radio for communication with other staff.
  • Provides radio escorts for non-regional staff, with management and as required. Conducts detailed airfield condition inspections, with other airport staff and as required. Reports deficiencies, occurrences, and adverse conditions to management and air traffic control; initiates or recommends corrective action, as appropriate.
  • Has contact with tenants to exchange information, provide assistance, and perform maintenance/ repairs.
  • Operates tractors and plow trucks with attachments, loaders, and small equipment (e.g., trimmers, chainsaws, generators, snow blowers).
  • Clears snow and ice from parking lots, roads, hanger areas, parking aprons, taxiways, runways, graded edges, threshold ends, and instrument landing system gravel pad. Shovels snow-buried runway lights.
  • Assists with special events (e.g., barricades, security, display cases).
  • Assists with security per Transport Canada requirements.
  • Cleans, lubricates, and performs minor repairs on vehicles, lawn care and snow removal equipment, and tools and equipment. Reports need to repair or replace corporate tools or equipment.
  • In the event of emergency, provides emergency response as required until emergency response team(s) arrive.
  • Performs some duties of the Airport Operations Specialist, as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of airport operations, procedures, requirements, and major components (e.g., aerodrome, grounds, buildings, equipment, vehicle maintenance), and communication and math skills, normally acquired through a Grade 12 education and 2 years of related maintenance experience.
  • Must meet Transport Canada regulations for operating airport vehicles and machinery by completing in-house training.
  • Must hold a valid Restricted Radio Telephone Operators Certificate (Aeronautical).
  • Must hold a valid Airport Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) or attain within 10 days of employment.
  • Must hold valid CPR and emergency first aid certification or attain upon employment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, and Transport Canada regulations/ guidelines (e.g., manual of airport traffic directives, radio telephone operator handbook, federal aviation regulations, security regulations, aerodrome standards and recommended practices).
  • Understanding of emergency response procedures and ability to assist in emergency response.
  • Must hold a valid D driver's licence with Z endorsement and acceptable driving record to operate corporate vehicles.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions, schedules, reports, regulations, procedure and equipment manuals, and other material related to flight movements. Ability to read and interpret aviation weather terminology. Ability to write maintenance and procedure reports.
  • Communication skills to respond to inquiries from tenants and the public; exchange information with contractors, tenants, and other airport staff; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to work variable shifts and hours (which can include weekends) and extended shifts (8-10 hours) for snow removal.
  • Must provide an acceptable Transport Canada Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC) within probationary period and/or as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
