As part of the hiring process, KWMC requires new hires to obtain and submit a police check from their local police services. The Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre acknowledges the systemic racism and oppression inherent in our society, including in our police and justice systems.
The result is an over-representation of Indigenous, racialized, and Black people in these systems, meaning that a police check can negatively impact these communities. For that reason, the vulnerable sector police check is only one aspect of the hiring process, and the decision to hire or not does not rest solely on the outcome of the vulnerable sector check.
The KW Multicultural Centre is committed to hiring employees that represent the diversity and multiculturalism of our community. We encourage applications from qualified members of groups with historical or current barriers to equity, which can include race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender expression, first language, accent, history of arrest or conviction, religion, and others.
KW Multicultural Centre’s vision is a “safe and inclusive community, where every individual, regardless of immigration status, has equitable access to opportunities and resources to prosper and thrive.”
