About the Position
Reporting to the Associate Dean in the Centre for Justice and Human Service (CJHS), the WAL Lab Compliance Specialist is responsible for the day to day WAL Lab operations at Lethbridge Polytechnic by ensuring compliance with the relevant quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) guidelines and policies and procedures of the institution.

Position Details
The Lab Compliance Specialist is an effective communicator with a thirst for knowledge and investigative instincts. They are analytical and able to navigate complex environments within a quickly changing landscape, often with competing priorities. At times with minimal guidance, and other times with support from Lab Technicians, they oversee, support, and/or guide WAL lab activities from client intake, sample arrival, sample preparation, to analysis and report delivery. They contribute to the development of internal processes and strategies to ensure quality and responsiveness. The specialist has quality control oversight on all samples, project administration, reports, contracts, and agreements within WAL. They work in collaboration with other institutional compliance personnel to protect the best interests of the Polytechnic in all activities.
Working closely with the CJHS and WAL teams, the Lab Compliance Specialist gathers information from a variety of sources to connect with potential clients, help write/review concise and informed proposals, reports, contracts, and agreements. The individual requires knowledge of key clientele and has the ability to continually manage client relations, track project progress, and help write/review succinct and relevant summary reports for clients. They take a lead role on tracking metrics and key performance indicators stated in project agreements, contracts and/or strategic plans.
Specific Accountabilities:
  • Manage client intake and communications (e.g., CRM) and work with Sr Admin Assistant with Contracts and Invoices.
  • Assume responsibility for project and sample management and analysis (e.g., receipt of samples, sample preparation, sample analysis, and report summary).
  • Prepare lab work plans (e.g., daily, weekly, or monthly TBD).
  • Ensure implementation and compliance of sample preparation, processing, and analysis protocols identified by WAL Technical Lead.
  • Support WAL Technical Lead with client presentations.
  • Provide scientific review and professional sign off for small customer client orders (<10 samples or TBD).
  • Submit large customer client orders analysis and report to WAL Technical Lead for QA/QC and report sign off.
  • Support institutional staff with technical requests (e.g., review of marketing material to ensure accuracy).
  • Support Sr. Administrative Assistant with information required for administrative processes
  • Provide training on equipment and protocols for casual lab techs.
  • Requires frequent contact with key stakeholders from within the Polytechnic and external clients.
  • Working environment is a lab environment combining focused work typically with computer and lab equipment.
  • Some occasional travel required.
  • Additional duties and activities identified by supervisor.

Reporting Relationships
This position reports to the Associate Dean and implements technical protocols identified by WAL Technical Lead.

Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related scientific field is required.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working in a lab environment.
  • Ability to liaise with a variety of clients to ensure samples are processed following appropriate methodologies and timelines.
  • Knowledge and experience in wildlife age identification techniques, particularly cementum analysis.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills such that the individual can work with clients and staff to create positive relationships, accurate reports, and concise contracts.
  • Experience with relevant lab equipment for Wildlife analytics e.g., sample, slide prep, staining.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • The ability to work independently with very little direct supervision.
  • The ability to search out relevant information and synthesize such information into concise material for use/application within the institution.
  • The ability to maintain and monitor timelines to ensure contract arrangements are met and are submitted on time.

Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree and/or professional designations in a relevant field preferred

Salary
Starting from $37.22 to $43.79 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
