Reporting to the Chief Mine Engineer, the Ventilation Specialist is responsible for designing, monitoring, and maintaining underground ventilation systems to ensure compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards. Ventilation Specialist role plays a critical part in maintaining air quality, controlling contaminants, and supporting safe and efficient underground operations. The Ventilation Specialist will conduct regular surveys, manage the ventilation model, and provide technical recommendations to optimize airflow and reduce risks. This role requires strong collaboration with operations, engineering, and technical services teams to ensure ventilation needs are met across all active work areas.
Job Responsibilities:
- Ensure ventilation systems are installed and monitored based on industry and site standards.
- Monitor underground areas for safety and document all findings.
- Control and track ventilation-related expenses.
- Conducts ventilation surveys and maintains accurate plans for operations, planning, and emergencies.
- Maintain controls to regulate airflow and prevent recirculation.
- Monitor air quality for dust and contaminants.
- Oversee repairs and compliance of auxiliary systems.
- Provide timely work plans aligned with mine schedules.
- Evaluate ventilation system efficiencies and make recommendations for improvements.
- Oversee and/or design and maintain a ventilation model using current ventilation modelling software, incorporating all relevant data.
- Troubleshoot and resolve ventilation system issues efficiently.
- Develop and maintain a critical infrastructure condition management plan to ensure the efficiency of the fresh air system.
- Keep fan inventories updated.
- Stay current with medium and long-term ventilation plans.
- Maintain and monitor ventilation instruments to the highest practical standards.
- Provide clear instructions for timely blast gas clearing operations in a timely manner
- Collaborate with Shift Supervisors, the Mine Foreman, and other members of the Technical Services team to prioritize ventilation needs.
Job Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering with 5+ years of underground ventilation experience and P.Eng. registration (or eligibility) in a Canadian province (e.g., APEGS, PEO, EGBC),
- OR a Mining Engineering Technology diploma with 10+ years of practical underground ventilation experience.
- Proficient in VentSim for ventilation modelling and analysis and Microsoft Office Suite
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Strong knowledge of underground mine ventilation systems, air quality monitoring, and applicable regulations.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with keen attention to detail.
- Effective communicator with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Able to perform and adapt well in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
- Committed to health and safety in underground operations.
