Overview
The Underwriter, Commercial Lending is responsible for underwriting and subsequent management of an assigned portfolio of commercial mortgage and corporate loans. The Underwriter, Commercial Lending provides high level of expertise in administration of the Bank’s commercial underwriting business by analyzing financial and supporting documents. The Underwriter, Commercial Lending must ensure that all applications adhere to the Bank’s established policies, underwriting standards and compliance & control requirements.
Responsibilities and Duties
[Credit Assessment]
- Review loan applications to ensure completeness, accuracy, and alignment with established credit policies and regulatory guidelines
- Conduct detailed financial evaluations of applicants by analyzing documents such as rent rolls, financial statements, and tax returns
- Assess loan security by reviewing third-party reports, including property appraisals, environmental assessments (Phase 1 & 2), and building condition reports
- Prepare comprehensive credit reports, including financial and collateral assessments, to support loan approval decisions
- Participate in internal credit review meetings, assisting in the determination of appropriate loan terms, conditions, and covenants
- Communicate approved loan conditions to internal stakeholders and issue formal commitments outlining terms and requirements
- Coordinate with relevant internal departments to ensure timely completion of all pre-funding steps
- Track and follow up on post-funding conditions to ensure compliance within specified timelines
[Portfolio Management]
- Conduct annual reviews of assigned loan accounts within set timeframes
- Ensure timely collection of required documentation such as financial statements, rent rolls, property tax records, and insurance certificates
- Monitor ongoing adherence to loan terms and covenants, providing regular status updates to internal committees
- Update credit risk ratings based on current financial performance and documentation
- Contribute to internal loan review processes and collaborate with stakeholders to establish action plans for underperforming or delinquent accounts

- Research and analyze market data and trends relevant to the industry (e.g., vacancy rates, capitalization rates, asset values)
- Perform on-site inspection at the credit committee’s direction
- Support departmental functions through administrative and reporting tasks as needed
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field
- 2 to 5 years of experience in commercial credit or lending
- Experience with syndicated and corporate loans is an asset
- Strong credit analysis skills, including the ability to interpret third-party assessments
- Familiarity with credit structuring, financial analysis, and underwriting processes
- Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage deadlines efficiently
