PURPOSE: Reporting to the Office Manager, the Social Worker Assistant supports the assigned delegated teams through direct administrative and service support to the social workers. The Social Worker Assistant will assume limited delegated authority under Snuw'uy'ulhtst tu Quw'utsun Mustimuhw 'u tu Shhw'a'luqw'a' 'i Smun'eem - Laws of the Cowichan People for Families and Children. This is a full-time, permanent position and works primarily in the office and community with moderate local travel.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $32.78 - $34.78 per hour ($59,651.82- $63,306.16 annually).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support Social Workers Regarding Delegated Responsibilities
•Update applicable databases with Ts’uwtun notes, client specific information and medical/education/professional services information
•Assist Ts’uwtun’s in meeting standards of practice through:
- Process and organization file documentation
- Attend meetings to take and transcribe meeting and visit notes
- Track due dates for key meetings or appointments for smun’eem and youth in agreements, aswell as family support
•Assist with child/family service and incident case management practices including system updates,and ensuring primary information is current (case addresses, contact, support network)
•Assist in implementing planned moves of smun’eem and youth in agreements, maintain contact withsmun’eem, care providers and families as necessary
•Track and update information and documentation on Mustimuhw Family Journey database.
•Create and send placement requests, as directed
•Support file transfers (within organization or interagency with MCFD/DAAs) by completing filereviews and readiness for transfer
•Provide administrative and technical support to Social Workers on various admin-related issues.
•Generating Mustimuhw Family Journey reports as needed
•Draft documents for Ts’uwtun approval and processing (ie. Voluntary care agreements, continuingcare agreements and other document templates)
•Complete referral documents, placement packages, and other documents as necessary
•Organize, attend and take notes for case plan and family meetings
•Forward all approved Caregiver Expenses, purchase orders, and check request to Operations Assistantfor processing
•Track and update important case documents, including smun’eem status cards, MSP coverage,passports, birth registration, etc.
•Support parents and youth in enrolling in community-based resources
•Support Ts’uwtun in the day-to-day support of client files where required
•Other related duties
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)
•Diploma in Child and Youth Care or related field; A combination of relevant education and experiencemay be considered
•2 years’ experience working with children and youth in related field
•Experience working in an Indigenous community is preferred, and a willingness to learn aboutCowichan Tribes culture, language, and traditions is required
•BC Class 5 Driver’s License
•Current criminal record check
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

- Knowledge of case management systems including Mustimuhw
- Knowledge of historical and contemporary issues impacting Indigenous people
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and sensitive information
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment with other staff, community members and service providers
- Skilled in document preparation with excellent attention to detail
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop various working relationships
- Ability to maintain professional composure in difficult or stressful situations
- Ability to pro-actively plan, establish priorities and manage time effectively to meet deadlines
