SCHOOL LIBRARIAN – LEARNING COMMONS (FULL-TIME LTO)

We’re looking for a full-time School Librarian for our Learning Commons to join our team for a 9 month LTO contract to start in September 2025. In this role, you will provide leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats, as well as expertise in the ethical use of information. You will empower students from Grade 6 to 12 to increase literacy skills and become enthusiastic readers, lifelong learners, critical thinkers, skillful researchers and ethical users of information. Reporting directly to both the Head, Prep School and the Head, Upper School, you’ll manage the overall operations of the Learning Commons.

What You’ll Be Doing:
· Developing and delivering an integrated library program to provide reading and reference materials and support the development of strong traditional and emerging electronic research skills in all students;
· Planning and carrying out the acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, preparation and organization of print and digital information, materials and books, to provide a comprehensive range of reading and reference materials to meet the needs of all students at the Prep and Upper Schools, and to foster a love of reading and learning;
· Developing and implementing library policies and procedures that reflect current and emerging technologies and other communication advancements, to connect students with global learning, promote the effective use of the library by all students and engage students in an enjoyable library experience;
· Developing and supporting students' learning and success by guiding them in:
o Reading for understanding, for exposure to diversity of viewpoints and genres and for pleasure;
o Using information for defined and self-defined purposes;
o Building on prior knowledge and constructing new knowledge;
o Embracing the world of information in all its formats;
· Planning and providing a program to develop and support strong research skills in students at the Prep School, Upper School and post-secondary level;
· Collaborating with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness;
· Providing the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program is aligned with the mission, goals and objectives of the school and is an integral component of the learning/instructional programme.
What You’ll Need:
- An undergraduate degree in library and information science or equivalent;
- A Bachelor of Education Degree or Master’s in Library and Information Science;
- Membership with the Ontario College of Teachers with additional qualifications in Teacher-Librarianship (for OCT candidates);
- 2 to 4 years’ direct experience in a library environment of an independent or post-secondary school environment;
· Knowledge of library principles, techniques and best practices with specialized knowledge of library services in an educational setting;
· Knowledge of research techniques and methodology in order to lead a program that teaches students effective research skills and supports them in ongoing research activities during their BVG education and beyond;
· Understanding of current and emerging relevant print and electronic books, materials, information, databases and other resources to ensure the availability of a comprehensive library selection;
· Strong communication and presentation skills;
· Demonstrated passion for literacy among students aged twelve and above;
· Excellent initiative and interpersonal skills to collaborate with academic leaders and faculty to engage all students and support academic needs. Connects with colleagues in the education and other sectors to exchange information and identify opportunities to share resources;
· Ability to assess databases and other research resources and arrange availability through purchase, sharing and/or subscription;
- Experience with the use of Library Management Systems including Follett Destiny and Overdrive.
