Job Summary
The Safety Coordinator supports Tornado Infrastructure’s commitment to maintaining a safe, compliant, and high-performance working environment within our fabrication facility. This role delivers day-to-day safety support directly on the shop floor—including inspections, orientations, training coordination, first aid response, and documentation—ensuring consistent application of health and safety practices across departments.
This is a boots-on-the-floor, non-supervisory role, ideal for a proactive safety professional with strong communication and organizational skills, who is prepared to lead immediate first aid response and participate in emergency preparedness within the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Execution
- Conduct daily shop-floor walk-throughs and observations to verify safe work practices.
- Monitor and promote compliance with PPE use, signage, and control measures.
- Assist in the rollout of safety procedures, signage, and awareness campaigns.
- Support completion and review of hazard assessments, Safe Job Procedures (SJPs), and Safe Work Practices (SWPs).
- Note safety gaps, near misses, and unsafe behavior and report findings to the Safety Manager.
First Aid & Emergency Response
- Act as the lead first aid responder for workplace injuries and incidents.
- Ensure first aid kits and stations are fully stocked, inspected, and compliant with Alberta OHS requirements.
- Participate in post-incident medical documentation and WCB reporting where required.
- Serve as an active member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), including participation in drills and emergency coordination.
- Support ongoing updates to emergency plans, evacuation routes, and first aid response protocols.
Worker Orientation & Training
- Deliver new hire safety orientations and complete follow-up sessions with employees.
- Schedule and track training and certification (e.g., WHMIS, confined space, fall protection).
- Maintain training logs and assist with issuing certificates and reminders for recertification.
- Reinforce safety messaging through toolbox talks and visual safety materials.
Incident Support & Documentation
- Assist with preparing incident and near-miss reports.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
- Submit required WCB documentation as directed and assist in injury documentation.
- Conduct WCB clearance checks for contractors or vendors as needed.
Inspection & Compliance Monitoring
- Coordinate monthly shop inspections and record findings.
- Support internal audits and assist in tracking corrective actions to completion.
- Help maintain safety bulletin boards with inspection results, safety stats, and committee materials.
- Assist with Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) participation and follow-up tasks.
Administrative & Reporting Support
- Maintain up-to-date safety records including inspection forms, orientation checklists, and toolbox talks.
- Track expiry dates for training and certifications.
- Enter data into internal tracking systems and provide summary reports when requested.
- Assist the Safety Manager in preparing documentation for audits, reviews, and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
Education
- High School diploma required
- Preferred: National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) or Manufacturing Safety Officer (MSO) designation.
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C certification is required (or ability to obtain prior to employment).
- Other safety-related coursework or certifications are assets.
Experience
- 1–3 years in a safety support role within a manufacturing or fabrication facility.
- Familiarity with Alberta OHS legislation, CSA standards, and workplace safety protocols.
- Experience responding to first aid incidents and participating in emergency drills or programs preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Calm and confident in responding to workplace injuries and emergencies. Clear verbal and written communication; able to deliver safety instructions effectively.
- Organized and reliable in managing schedules, records, and inspections.
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Excel, Word, safety databases or training logs).
- Ability to recognize hazards and apply a calm, consistent approach to safety enforcement.
- Professional demeanor and willingness to learn and take direction.
- Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and a respectful, team-oriented attitude.
Working Conditions
- Primary work environment: Fabrication and manufacturing facility (indoor, controlled access).
- Physical requirements:
- Standing and walking for long periods on shop floor
- Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
- Exposure to high noise levels, equipment movement, and seasonal temperature changes
- PPE: CSA-approved work boots required (employee-supplied); all other PPE is provided by the company.
- Work is performed entirely onsite; no travel or fieldwork is required.
Additional Requirements
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Valid certification in First Aid and willingness to maintain currency.
- Active and reliable presence for scheduled shifts to support emergency readiness.
