Job Summary:
Working as part of the Recycling team, the Recycling Support Staff assists in reducing the volume of contaminated materials in the flow of recyclables by identifying contaminants in collection bins and engaging in efforts to provide education. He/she performs general maintenance and repair to collection bins and assists with confidential shredding tasks. The role of Recycling Support Staff is vital in achieving agency goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safely operate industrial vehicles in completing assigned tasks.
- Check recycling bins for contamination in advance of collection schedule (see attached procedure – Appendix A).
- Gather information about recycling bin contents and provide that information to the MURR CSR.
- Apply informational/educational decals to recycling bins as assigned.
- Perform general maintenance for bins where required.
- Identify and report serious/major damage to bins.
- Perform confidential shredding tasks.
- Work in accordance with Cosmo Shred’s NAID (National Association for Information Destruction) policies and procedures for handling confidential material.
- Complete routine maintenance checks on equipment as required; report concerns.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; compliance with and participation in all safe work procedures and cleaning/disinfecting tasks.
- Prepare documentation and reports as required by Cosmopolitan Industries Ltd.
- Participate as an active team member (communication, coverage during staff shortages etc.).
- Develop effective working relationships with all staff and program participants to ensure a respectful and positive work environment is achieved.

Working Conditions:
- Personal protective equipment required for various activities/tasks e.g. mask, steel-toed boots, safety glasses/goggles, safety vest, hearing protection etc.
- Works both indoors and outdoors
- Environment may expose workers to extreme heat/cold, paper dust, chemicals, diesel fumes, unusual/strong odors and/or contaminated materials/products; pet rabbits, birds and fish; visiting therapy animals e.g. dogs
- Exposure to volatile situations that have the potential to escalate to verbal and/or physical altercation may occur
- Works alone in the community
- Schedules may not provide for scheduled breaks
- May be required to work flexible work hours/days; shift work as scheduled
Skills, Effort and Competencies:
Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment.
Education
Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
Qualifications
Valid Saskatchewan Driver’s license; must maintain a driving record that is acceptable to Cosmopolitan Industries Ltd.
Experience
Experience completing minor repairs and preventative building maintenance in an industrial setting is desirable.
Communication Skills
Ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions both orally and in writing is essential.
Physical Demands
Long periods of standing and/or bending may be required. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Mental Demands
High level of sound and independent judgement and reasoning ability. Ability to work well under pressure and within established timelines. Ability to multi-task and establish priorities in a changing environment.
Other
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Strong problem solving skills. Excellent time management. Willingness to participate in and apply relevant training as requested/required by Cosmopolitan Industries Ltd.
