As a Recreation Leader within Recreation and Social Programs or Parks and Open Spaces, you will be responsible for leading programs and activities while supervising participants in children and youth programs. Such programs may include general recreation and/or social programs, special events, day camps and AfterSchool programs. Primary duties include:

  • Work collaboratively with team and assist in the development and implementation of meaningful cultural program plans and activities.
  • Lead recreation and/or social programs that focus on social and skill-based outcomes following the Circle of Courage model.
  • Be a positive role model while mentoring participants and volunteers.
  • Ensure safety and supervision of participants.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies required for activities and assist with daily set up and clean up.
  • Maintain records, provide program feedback and assist with program evaluation.
  • Communicate professionally with direct supervisors, program team and caregivers.
  • Maintain high degree of customer service.
Qualifications
  • You must be minimum 16 years of age for children's programs or minimum 18 years of age for youth programs.
  • Children Program Leaders must have 4 months direct experience working with children such as: volunteering, babysitting practicum, post-secondary education, coaching, mentoring or related.
  • Youth Programs Leaders must have 4 months direct experience working with youth such as: leadership andor volunteer development, coaching, mentoring, volunteering, practicum, post-secondary education, or related.
  • Calgary AfterSchool leaders (Fall, Winter, Spring seasons) must be available during program time for a minimum of 3 hours per day, 2+ days a week, Monday through Friday with weekend shift opportunities. Program times and locations will be listed on Calgary.caAfterSchool .
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for work may be required for some positions.
  • Ability to obtain The City of Calgary operator's permit may be required for some positions.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations i.e. culturally andor physically divers populations would be considered an asset.
  • Interest in, currently enrolled in post-secondary fields or possess Child Studies, Education, Social Work, Kinesiology, or related Human Service fields will be considered an asset.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and relationship building skills along with the ability to solve problems and resolve conflicts.
  • Sound judgement in safety standards, well-developed customer service skills, and willingness to take initiative and extra leadership duties within program space.
Pre-employment Requirements
  • Current Intermediate First Aid certification (equivalent to Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) level C, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED)) is required.
  • A valid Security Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Search must be provided for those over 18 years of age and a valid Police Information Check must be provided for those under 18years of age. Date of completion must be within the last 12 months.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Compensation: $17.31 - $21.39 per hour
Days of Work: This position works various
shifts including daytime, evening and weekends.

Hours of work: On-Call hours will vary based on operational requirements.
