Role and Facility Information
The Department of Orthopaedics at St. Paul’s Hospital and Providence Health Care is seeking an Academic Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon.
The successful candidate will have at least 1-2 years of subspecialty fellowship training in adult foot & ankle surgery, a master’s degree in Health Economics or Epidemiology, as well as demonstrated strength in research and teaching in an academic surgical setting.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
The successful candidate will replace one retiring surgeon and be mentored by the remaining foot and ankle surgeons.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and will have demonstrated abilities to work within a complex tertiary care environment, to participate in teams providing multidisciplinary care, and to perform appropriate orthopaedic surgical procedures at the highest level in a cost & resource constrained environment.
Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and will have completed postgraduate and fellowship requirements prior to appointment. They will hold or be eligible for licensure with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Orthopaedic Surgery.
St. Paul’s Hospital is a Level 3 trauma center and receives primarily single-limb trauma. It is also both a large tertiary care teaching hospital serving patients from across British Columbia and a downtown hospital in Vancouver serving the urban core and a diverse, often marginalized population. The successful applicant will be expected to capably manage a diverse range of general orthopaedic trauma, including upper and lower extremity fractures, as well as musculoskeletal infections and wounds. The Department of Orthopaedics at St. Paul’s Hospital is currently comprised of 11 full-time and 3 part-time members with academic subspecialty interests in upper extremity reconstruction, foot & ankle, and arthroplasty.

The successful candidate will work with Dr. Murray Penner to transition in as he transitions to retirement. The office practice location will be at Footbridge.

- Participate in the St. Paul’s Hospital Orthopaedic On-Call group
- Manage complex tertiary/quaternary foot & ankle reconstruction with confidence
- Fully participate in the academic and research activities of Foot & Ankle Program at St. Paul’s Hospital and Footbridge Centre for Integrated Orthopaedic Care
- Meet the requirements for academic appointment to the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine
- Teach Orthopaedic residents and fellows
- Assist the Department in meeting targets for surgical case volumes and wait times, including availability for weekend OR time
- Participate in centralized intake for foot & ankle referrals
- Begin practice with a 2 year full-time provisional term, with potential to move to full active staff status thereafter
