The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) isn't just a regulatory agency; we're the heartbeat of Ontario's vibrant alcohol, gaming, horseracing, and private cannabis retail sectors. As a dedicated organization reporting to the Ministry of the Attorney General, we uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity while championing public interest and safety. Here, innovation thrives, ideas flourish, and passion drives us to new heights of excellence.

Are you a strategic thinker with a passion for public service and collaborative problem-solving? We're seeking an Operational Priorities Specialist, an experienced professional who excels in research and analysis, relationship management, and stakeholder consultation. In this role, you'll serve as a subject matter expert, working across teams to identify the causes of regulatory problems and drive informed decision-making by developing action plans to address operational priorities. Your familiarity with government structures and frameworks, paired with strong presentation skills, will enable you to effectively engage colleagues and senior leaders. If you bring creativity to complex challenges and thrive in environments where innovation and influence intersect, the Operational Planning, Priorities and Performance Branch (OPB) would love to hear from you.

About the job

In this role, the successful candidate will:
  • Analyze and critically evaluate problem statements gathered from multiple sources to identify patterns, trends, and reconcile conflicts.
  • Partner with colleagues to understand and identify significant risks, harms, or patterns of non-compliance, with a focus on emerging or previously unrecognized risks.
  • Define the desired future state and establish clear goals aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Determine business requirements using interviews, document analysis, workshops, surveys, and other analytical techniques.
  • Conduct research using interviews, document analysis, workshops, surveys, and other analytical techniques to determine business requirements and identify priorities.
  • Draw conclusions from research and analysis to inform recommendations and solution development.
  • Produce clear, coherent, and meaningful presentations, reports, and compliance plans that accurately reflect the results of assessments and research.
  • Deliver updates and briefings on the progress of initiatives to branch leadership and stakeholders.
  • Develop tailored action plans for priority-driven initiatives.
  • Coordinate the execution of risk-based action plans across relevant teams or branches.

What you bring to the team

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Post-secondary education combined with 5+ years of relevant professional experience, including education or equivalent experience in risk management (formal certification is an asset).
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with demonstrated experience in improving business processes.
  • Ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders using tact, discretion, and political acuity.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and analysis to support sound decision-making.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively in a variety of formats to colleagues and senior leaders.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, record-keeping, and time-management skills.
  • Proven ability to assess risk and compliance while applying regulatory principles, sector knowledge, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn, relevant Acts, regulations, and standards applicable to the sectors the AGCO regulates.
  • The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and will be subject to a criminal background check.
