The MH/QHC Medical Laboratory Assistants are the laboratory professionals responsible for specimen handling to include the receiving, sorting, preparation and distribution of samples to the lab departments for analysis by an MLT. They also manage referred out testing.
Responsibilities:
- Primary source of contact between the laboratory and other health care professionals, in all inpatient and outpatient areas.
- Sort all specimen types.
- Distribute specimens’ through 24hr laboratory.
- Load specimens on to chemistry line
- Packaging and dispatch of specimens for cross-site and referred out testing.
- Accessioning and handling of referred in testing.
- Management of send out testing and results reporting.
- Maintenance as required.
- Manage Inventory as required.
- Miscellaneous duties as required.
- Order entry and recovery as required during Downtime.
- Practices according to, and is knowledgeable in, the Laboratory Quality Management System.
- Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and follow hospital safety procedures. This includes wearing necessary protective equipment, reporting problems with equipment and hazards, and having a medical follow-up at the request of Occupational Health Services.
- Must have the physical strength, flexibility, and endurance required to perform the job, as analyzed by the physical needs assessment for the position conducted by Occupational Health Services.
- Participate and show competence in pneumatic tube system evaluation, written annual competency.
Qualifications:
- Laboratory Assistant Certification required.
- MLPAO/OSMT registration preferred
- CSMLS an asset.
- 2 - 5 years recent experience in a clinical laboratory setting (receiving room).
- Knowledge of laboratory LIS (Laboratory Information Systems)
- Good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skill.
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position: Standing for long times, walking across the lab throughout the shift; answering and calling different units
- Required to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Satisfactory employment and attendance record required.
- Able to learn and use Technology for work & communication: MS Office, EMR (EPIC), etc.
- Good Troubleshooting skills
