Job Description:
- Receive, accession and number surgical specimens, cassettes and slides in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Receive, accession, prepare, and stain Cytology specimens in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Maintain supplies and provisions for the work area including all consumables and bulk reagents, with appropriate documentation of information, as required
- Carry out required routine maintenance on laboratory instruments utilized, including tissue processors, automatic stainers, cassette labelers, etc.
- Perform solutions exchanges on the automatic stainer and tissue processors; add and remove slides from automated instrumentation.
- File and retrieve specimens, slides and blocks as required.
- Prepare and appropriately document the shipping of specimen/slides to external organizations for processing in accordance with Transport of Dangerous Goods requirements.
- Sort and file surgical specimens for storage in wet storage facility and discard specimens in accordance to guidelines for the disposal of pathological waste
- Organize waste solvents for storage and assist in the removal of wastes by the waste haulage company, as required.
- Perform quality control and assurance activities in line with established procedures.
- Ensure that your workspace is maintained in a clean and tidy manner, with regular disinfection of work surfaces
- Practice according to, and is knowledgeable in, the laboratory Quality Management System.
- Observe all safety and fire regulations. Report any accident or unsafe conditions to the manager/senior technologist immediately.
- Maintain competence in procedures for which the employee has been trained and strive to improve knowledge and technical expertise through continuing education.
- Assist with teaching and training as required
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of an accredited Laboratory Assistant course
- OSMT (Ontario Society of Medical Technology) certification required
- Experience with and demonstrated understanding of quality assurance and good laboratory practice
- Recent experience in an Anatomical Pathology laboratory preferred
- Dedicated to safe practice with chemical and reagent handling
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently
- Attention to detail and ability to multi-task
- Ability to lift 50lbs
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Knowledge of laboratory information systems; Epic experience is an asset
- Satisfactory attendance and performance required
