About Us


The Indigenous Student Centre (ISC) works towards fostering a thriving student environment, to inspire Indigenous students at Western to realize their full potential through the provision of culturally relevant space, services, and advocacy that encourage wholistic and strength-based approaches to learning. The ISC fits under the umbrella of Western’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII) which leads system-wide change required to advance truth and reconciliation efforts, achieve equitable outcomes for Indigenous peoples, and implement Western’s institutional and Indigenous Strategic Plan. The OII is committed to building and strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities locally, provincially, nationally and internationally, and fostering an academic environment where all students, staff, faculty and community members experience the university as a welcoming, supportive, culturally-safe environment in which Indigenous languages, ways of knowing, being and doing are respected and supported.

Responsibilities


The¿Indigenous Academic Tutor & Mentorship Program¿will¿work closely with Indigenous secondary students, fostering a nurturing and supportive academic mentorship as part of the Indigenous Academic Tutor and Mentorship Program. This initiative is a partnership between Western’s Indigenous Student Centre and the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) and the London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB.) With current Indigenous Western students acting as tutors and role models, the IATM is a relationship-based academic support program that embodies a wholistic perspective of students.

As an Indigenous academic tutor and mentor, you will not only support students (grades 9-12) with subjects such as english, history, math, science, or other areas, but also guide them in their personal and academic growth. This position will have both in-person and remote aspects; it is essential applicants reside in or near London, ON.

Responsibilities:¿ Subject expertise is not required; your role will focus on empowering students to organize their work, explore content, engage in critical thinking, and build strategies to succeed academically.

  • Facilitate weekly tutoring/mentoring¿drop-in¿sessions (3-5 hours a week.)¿¿
  • Foster one-on-one or small group mentoring relationships, helping Indigenous high school students improve academic skills and build confidence in a safe and culturally respectful environment.
  • Inspire and motivate students to complete assignments, enhance their understanding of course content, and develop organizational and problem-solving skills. Actively engage in critical questioning to deepen students’ learning and promote self-reliance in their studies.
  • Assist in classrooms when invited, contributing positively to the learning environment.
  • Connect with teachers/support staff regarding student progress and needs.
  • Participate in school/community events¿on invitation.
  • Communicate regularly with the Community Enhancement Coordinator (ISC) and attend mandatory training and staff meetings.

Supervisor and Support: ¿

  • This position will be supervised by the Community Enhancement Coordinator at the Indigenous Student Centre.
  • Regular communication and collaboration will occur with TVDSB teachers and designated staff to ensure effective support for students.¿

Qualifications:¿

Required¿

  • Must be¿enrolled as a¿student at Western University.¿¿
  • Knowledgeable of Indigenous secondary student needs and experiences.¿
  • Knowledgeable and sensitive to working with diverse Indigenous student populations.¿
  • Must have excellent communication skills, time management and organizational skills.¿¿
  • Must be able to take¿initiative and¿work independently.¿
  • Must be able to tutor in one the following subjects: Math, English, Science, History or French.¿¿

  • Have experience tutoring students.¿
  • Indigenous applicants who have their declarations of Indigenous Citizenship or Membership affirmed as per Western policy 1.58.
