Overview
We are a fast-growing Building Automation Systems (BAS) contractor specializing in HVAC controls, energy optimization, and carbon-reduction projects. With annual revenue of $1M+ and long-term construction contracts, we need a hands-on, detail-oriented Fractional Controller to implement robust financial processes, maintain accurate job-costing, and deliver timely reporting to support profitable growth.
The ideal candidate has construction industry experience, can set up scalable accounting/reporting systems, and is comfortable working with a lean leadership team (CEO, COO, PM).
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all core accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job-cost tracking, and month-end close.
- Prepare accurate monthly financial statements, job P&Ls, and cash-flow reports.
- Maintain a 13-week cash-flow forecast to proactively manage billing/payment cycles
- Reconcile accounts monthly, investigate discrepancies, and implement corrective actions quickly.
Project Job-Costing & Budgeting
- Set up job-cost tracking for projects in QuickBooks & Zoho Books.
- Monitor project budgets and cost-to-complete reports; flag margin erosion early.
- Support estimating team by providing historical cost data to refine bids.
Process & Systems Improvement
- Implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls tailored to construction/BAS operations.
- Automate workflows where possible (invoicing, reporting, payroll integrations).
- Train internal staff on proper coding, documentation, and reporting practices.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Controller, Senior Accountant, or similar role, ideally in construction, BAS, MEP, or related trades.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting best practices.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and Zoho Books; ADP Payroll familiarity is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with job-costing, WIP (Work-in-Progress) reporting, and long-term project accounting.
- Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to clearly present financial data to non-finance stakeholders.
- Self-starter comfortable working fractionally with minimal supervision.
Compensation
- Rate: Based on Experience
- Hours: 20+ hrs/month for the first couple months (setup phase), then 8–16 hrs/month ongoing.
