Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of the organization. This includes managing our Administration & Finance team, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, preparing financial reports, developing budgets, and implementing internal controls. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and deep knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
- Maintain the general ledger and oversee all journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting functions
- Analyze financial data and present financial forecasts, variance reports, and recommendations to senior management
- Coordinate year-end audit and liaise with external auditors
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads
- Monitor and report on budget performance and assist in reforecasting as needed
Compliance, Governance & Risk Management:
- Ensure adherence to accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting
- Ensure proper documentation and policies are in place to meet regulatory and organizational standards
- Manage statutory filings, corporate reporting obligations, and compliance across provincial and federal jurisdictions
- Oversee the preparation and submission of corporate and indirect tax filings
Transactional Oversight:
- Direct accounts payable, receivable, billing, and cash management activities
- Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency in daily accounting operations
Audit & External Coordination:
- Serve as the lead contact for external auditors, preparing necessary documentation and addressing inquiries
- Support audit readiness and streamline audit processes
Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor finance and accounting staff
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations for the team
- Provide training and development opportunities
Strategic Support:
- Work closely with the owners to support strategic initiatives and financial planning
- Assist in evaluating financial impact of business decisions and operational strategies
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
- CPA designation
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance
- Experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or similar leadership role
- Medical, healthcare, insurance or community healthcare experience is a plus
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial regulations
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel
- Strong communication and leadership abilities
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position with standard business hours; occasional evenings or weekends may be required based on organizational needs.
