Living Tree is seeking two (2) enthusiastic and hard-working Junior to Intermediate Environmental Consultants to assist with forest health monitoring and management, wildfire fuel reduction and mitigation, Dutch elm disease (DED) monitoring/management and various environmental monitoring projects throughout Western Canada.
The duties for the position will include:
- Deployment and collection of forest pest monitoring traps.
- Establishment and measurement of both temporary and permanent forest mensuration plots.
- Identification and mapping of landscape level forest health agents in the Boreal Forest.
- Establishment of new and measurement of existing long-term climate change monitoring plots in both coniferous and deciduous forest stands.
- Mountain pine beetle surveillance and management.
- Assistance with wildfire fuel reduction operations.
- Detection and marking of DED infected elm trees and violations regulated by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment Forest Resource Management Act/Regulations and Alberta Agricultural Pest Act and Regulations.
- Providing information and guidance on DED management to landowners, stakeholders, and municipal officials.
- Assistance to senior forest health specialists with data entry and analysis.
- Successful completion of both in-house and external safety training.
Preferred skills and experience:
- Completion of either a diploma or degree in a natural science program (e.g. Biology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Urban Forestry, Environmental Science, Integrated Resource Management).
- Previously acquired International Society of Arboriculture Certification.
- Knowledge and experience with identifying common tree species in both the Boreal and urban forest.
- Competency with forest mensuration methods and procedures is an asset.
- Experience navigating with a handheld GPS unit and compass, working with Haglof Hypsometers and safely operating and maintaining a chainsaw and compass is an asset.
- Previous experience completing aerial surveys in both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft is an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
Salary/Wage/Benefits:
- The salary range for these positions is $27 to $37/hour and is commensurate with relevant experience. When working away from home, meal per diems, transportations and accommodations are provided. This position is expected to start in September 2025. Living Tree offers competitive benefits packages. The successful candidate will be required to submit a valid driver’s abstract and criminal record check. Candidates located in or near Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Calgary and Edmonton are preferred.
