The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is seeking a Director of Energy to lead transformative energy initiatives across our territory. This is more than just a leadership role — it’s an opportunity to drive bold, community-first solutions that support energy sovereignty, climate resilience, and sustainable development for NunatuKavut Inuit.
About Us
NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who belong to South and Central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents the NunatuKavut Inuit. Our vision reflects a commitment to community and culture as we strive “to govern ourselves,” providing and caring for one another, our families, and our communities while nurturing our relationship with the lands and waters.
What You’ll Do
As Director of Energy, you will lead the development and implementation of NCC’s energy strategy — from high-level vision to on-the-ground action. This includes overseeing clean energy projects, building key partnerships, influencing policy, and ensuring all initiatives reflect the values and priorities of NunatuKavut communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and drive a long-term energy vision rooted in sustainability, innovation, and community sovereignty.
- Provide high-level strategic advice to NCC leadership on energy-related policies, community energy sovereignty, and emerging trends across local, provincial, and national levels.
- Lead the planning and execution of clean energy projects — including funding applications, implementation, and reporting.
- Advise NCC leadership on energy trends, technologies, and policy directions across all levels of government.
- Build strategic partnerships with governments, utilities, funders, Indigenous energy networks, and private sector innovators.
- Represent NCC at conferences, panels, and intergovernmental forums to elevate our leadership in Indigenous-led energy transformation.
- Foster training and career development pathways for NunatuKavut members in energy-related fields (auditing, trades, project management, etc.).
- Integrate energy planning across NCC’s housing, infrastructure, and economic development portfolios.
- Champion initiatives that prioritize environmental stewardship, cultural values, and community self-determination.
About You
You’re a strategic thinker, a skilled collaborator, and a passionate changemaker with a strong understanding of the energy sector and a deep respect for Indigenous rights and governance.
What You Bring
- A graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., engineering, energy systems, Indigenous governance, environmental science, public policy), or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years in senior leadership roles within energy, climate, sustainability, or Indigenous project development.
- A track record of leading complex, multi-stakeholder energy projects and managing diverse teams.
- Solid experience in strategic planning and decision making, with a demonstrated ability to craft and execute long-term plans.
- An established profile and network within the energy sector, with proven experience engaging in high-level Indigenous energy forums and collaborating with cross-jurisdictional partners to advance objectives.
- Solid experience working with Indigenous communities, and a deep understanding of Indigenous governance, rights-based frameworks, and community-led initiatives.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and strategic planning skills.
- Experience securing and managing diverse funding streams (grants, government programs, philanthropy, etc.).
- A commitment to cultural respect, accountability, and long-term community impact.
