The Opportunity:

NEC is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Development to join our dynamic and lean team. This role is perfect for a self-starter with strong personal leadership who thrives in a challenging, high-impact environment. You will play a pivotal role in expanding NEC's project portfolio and advancing key renewable energy initiatives, directly contributing to a sustainable future for Northern communities.

Our Team:

We are a close-knit and agile team of approximately 10 dedicated professionals. Our employees live and work across Canada, in cities including Vancouver, Calgary, Whitehorse, Montreal, and Ottawa. While we are a remote-first company, fostering flexibility and efficiency, we also maintain physical office spaces in Vancouver and Calgary. This distributed yet connected structure allows us to effectively serve our diverse project regions while maintaining a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Director of Development, your multifaceted role will involve:

1. Project Development Activities:

○ Drive the advancement of a portfolio of signed projects from development stages through to implementation.

○ With the support of the broader NEC team and a variety of vendors, oversee the completion of all project development activities ahead of construction, including community energy plans, project concept design, feasibility and technical studies, implementation planning, permitting and regulatory approvals, land access agreements, site visits, financial support, and community engagement.

○ Cultivate strong relationships through continuous stakeholder and community engagement, ensuring projects align with local needs and values.

○ Lead the coordination and facilitation of community engagement events in the places where our projects are being developed, including speaking at town halls, guiding stakeholder meetings, and participating in conferences.

○ Develop detailed financial models and conduct in-depth technical analyses for project optimization.

○ Develop and manage project budgets, and assist with monthly payment of vendors.

○ Engage with potential project vendors and subcontractors through public procurement processes, including the preparation of RFPs and subsequent contract negotiations

○ Carry out contract management with successful vendors, in line with contract obligations, overall project schedule, and budget.

○ Prepare comprehensive project reports for stakeholders, project owners, and government.

○ Lead the preparation and submission of grant applications to secure project funding, including cultivating and maintaining relationships with key project funding agencies.

○ Prepare and submit regular project progress and financial reports for federal funding programs under existing project funding agreements.

2. Business Development Activities:

○ Proactively identify and analyze new renewable energy opportunities across Northern Canada and Alaska.

○ Conduct comprehensive business casing and financial modeling to assess project viability and potential returns.

Lead initial stakeholder engagement efforts, fostering relationships with potential partners and communities.

○ Perform general analytical activities to support strategic decision-making in project acquisition.

Projects You Might Work On:

This role will involve contributing to a diverse portfolio of impactful renewable energy projects across Northern Canada and Alaska, ranging from wind and solar farms to comprehensive community energy plans. Qualifi cations:

● Experience: Approximately 5-8 years of progressive work experience in renewable energy project development, business analysis, or a related field.

● Education: University degree in a relevant field such as Business, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Finance, or a related discipline.

● Skills:

○ Exceptional project management capabilities, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently.

○ Strong financial modeling skills and a solid understanding of project economics.

○ Highly conceptual and analytical thinker, adept at problem-solving and strategic planning.

○ Proven ability in stakeholder management, with excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.

○ A rapid learner who can quickly absorb new knowledge, adapt to changing circumstances, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

○ Nice-to-have: Community Engagement experience, with demonstrated cultural sensitivity and a self-reflective nature, crucial for effective engagement with Indigenous communities.

○ Nice-to-have: Strong visual communication skills, with the ability to create compelling presentations and graphics to convey complex information clearly.

● Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and Google Workspace Suite.

● Travel: Willingness and ability to travel extensively to remote communities in Northern Canada and Alaska.

Compensation & Work Environment:

● Employment Type: Full-time, Maternity leave contract 12-18 months

● Salary Range: CAD $80,000 - $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

● Location: Hybrid work model based out of our Vancouver or Calgary offi ces. While we embrace remote-first principles, this role allows for in-person collaboration and engagement as needed.

● Travel Requirements: Regular travel to remote communities in Northern Canada and Alaska is an integral part of this role, estimated at approximately one week every two months on average.
