Position Title: Director, Information Technology and Database

Reporting to: Executive Director, Operations
Salary Range: $165,000 to $190,000
SUMMARY
The Director, Information Technology and Database (the "Director") has accountability for the establishment and execution of the organization-wide IT strategy and ensures alignment with the organization's strategic direction and operational strategy and the delivery of all information and technology capabilities required to achieve the Union's success.
As part of the senior management team, the Director participates in and contributes to the overall union operating model and organizational strategy development. The Director brings a current knowledge and future vision of leveraging information and technology in business model design, organizational capability performance re-engineering, product and service development, and ensuring the security of IT systems.
Results are accomplished by:
1. Contributing actively to Union strategy and organizational capability strategic planning. Leads the development of the IT and database strategic plan and roadmap. Ensures integration with the Union’s strategic direction and plans.
2. Determining the operating model for information technology and database management to foster organization-oriented and digital-ready culture, mindsets, and practices in support of the Union’s mission
3. Enhancing IT’s capabilities by leveraging a multitude of resources, both internally and externally. Directs the development and implementation of the IT infrastructure and database system and data quality standards.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
IT Strategy and Management:
- Establishes active relationships with leadership, directors, managers and members of their teams. Acts as a trusted advisor to ensure all leaders can make confident decisions about the application of information and technology within their departments and across the organization.
- Collaborates with Council to strategically develop digital solutions for member engagement and services to drive culture change in support of digital business transformation.
- Develops and maintains an IT workforce with the appropriate mix of business knowledge, technical skills and competencies. Balances the need for growing the agility required to achieve digital business objectives, with ensuring the core IT functions are reliable, stable and efficient.
- Provides strategic direction in the organization’s innovation efforts and role in experimenting with new solutions to take advantage of those opportunities in the fulfillment of the enterprise’s digital organizational strategy.
- Works with HR and key role holders to map out scenarios for IT workforce transformations. Develops the IT workforce strategy and action plans that align with and enable the effective execution of business and IT strategies.
- Responsible for the effectiveness of staff within their department including hiring, conducting evaluations, imposing discipline up to and including termination.
- Developing and implementing IT strategies aligned with the organization's goals.
- Overseeing the IT budget and resource allocation.
- Managing IT infrastructure, including hardware, software, and networks.
- Ensuring the security and compliance of IT systems.
- Provides leadership, coaching and direction to the IT leadership team.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Managing and optimizing database systems, including performance tuning and troubleshooting.
- Ensuring data quality, accuracy, and security.
- Developing and implementing data management strategies.
- Leading the database team.
- Working with various role holders, including business users and other teams, to understand their needs and ensure IT solutions meet those needs.
- Communicating IT strategies and initiatives to the organization.
- Collaborating with other departments to integrate IT solutions into their workflows.
- Developing and enforcing data governance policies.
- Ensuring data management practices adhere to relevant regulations and policies.
- Managing data security and privacy.
- Developing and implementing data quality standards.
An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
Education and Professional Certifications
- A Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Information Technology, Technology Management, Computer Science, Leadership, Business etc.)
- Proven senior leadership experience including 15 or more years of working experience in the field and at least 5 to 7 years in leadership positions overseeing a team and managing complex projects.
- Preferably five or more years of experience in related, industry-leading, large, cross-functional teams or organizational-wide programs, influencing senior-level management and key role holders effectively across the organization and within complex contexts.
- Leadership: Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, dynamic, creative with ability to work on own initiative and implement successorship training and planning.
- DEI: Demonstrate and leads a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion and commitment to advancing reconciliation, cultural safety and redressing the harms of Indigenous-specific racism.
- Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure, database systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, DB2), and data management principles.
- Management Skills: Proven experience in managing teams, budgets, and projects.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and implement IT strategies aligned with business goals.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with all level of an organization and manage teams Including effective presentation to governing board.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and develop solutions.
- Business Acumen: Understanding of business operations and the role of technology in supporting business objectives.
- Data Management Expertise: Experience with data quality, data governance, and data security.
- Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics.
- Occasional travel is required for this position.
