Complex Care Mandate:
Vernon Native Housing Society is creating a Complex-Care home for ten Indigenous women. This home will be a new approach to providing culturally safe and trauma-informed housing and services for individuals with complex mental health and substance use challenges.
General Overview of the Position:
In alignment with the vision and values of the organization, the Cultural Support Worker utilizes their lived experience with substance use and/or mental health challenges, their own wellness journey, and knowledge thier of healthcare and community supports to assist residents in identifying and achieving their goals. As an integral member of a multi-disciplinary Mental Health and Substance Use Team within a Complex Care Housing setting, the Cultural Support Worker complements the services and care plan for residents in the home. This person will collaborate with residents and the care team to determine cultural aspects of care planning. They will support clients to strengthen self-determination, provide supportive culturally appropriate wellness planning.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Promote and support traditional Indigenous cultural teachings and practice for residence and CCH staff.
2. Assist CCH staff to facilitate appropriate cultural practices within the programs.
3. Assist in singing and drumming groups within CCH programs.
4. Assist in the overall care of the CCH cultural area, materials and artifacts.
5. Work with residents to provide cultural teachings and assist in the development and implementation of cultural components to the program using the Medicine Wheel and Seven Sacred Teachings.
6. Provides supportive professional relationships with the family and extended family of the residents in the program’s home.
7. Utilizes a number of spiritual practices to support residents including smudging, medicine wheel, seven sacred teachings and healing circles.
8. Develops and leads groups in various ceremonies during significant benchmark events in Spirit programs and the broader community.
9. Engages in collaborative community partnerships with various Elders, Knowledge keepers, and resource persons to promote cultural teachings and practice.
10. Participate in team meetings, agency meetings and training deemed necessary for this position.
11. Maintain an appropriate record and information system. Ensure that accurate program and client records are maintained, and that confidentiality is a priority.
12. Maintain health records and administer first aid and medications as required.
13. Observe and remove potential hazards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
Grade 12 or equivalent, graduation from a recognized Human Service Worker program or Social Service Worker Program; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated extensive experience working with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals, families, and communities in culturally safe and trauma-informed ways.
- Experience working with mental illness is an asset
- Food Safe Level 1 Certificate
- Basic First Aid Certificate
- Non-violent crisis intervention training
- Current valid B.C. driver’s license.
Skills and Abilities:
- Practical knowledge of substance use and mental health
- Ability to perform duties independently and in team environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong observation skills
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to organize, set priorities and follow through with direction
- Ability to type progress notes
Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants as per Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code.
