Summary
We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Corporate Controller to lead our accounting function in a dynamic, fast-growing waste management environment. Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, this role will oversee all aspects of corporate accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls, while supporting the integration of acquisitions and driving continuous improvement across financial operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead the corporate accounting team, ensuring accurate general ledger management, month-end close, consolidations, and financial reporting.
- Oversee and monitor month-end close timelines, ensuring all deadlines are met and reporting is completed accurately and consistently each month.
- Drive the development, maintenance, and enhancement of internal and external financial reports and dashboards to support decision-making and compliance.
- Oversee preparation and analysis of monthly and quarterly financial reporting for senior leadership and banking covenants.
- Prepare and review annual financial statements and related note disclosures, ensuring clarity, completeness, and compliance with ASPE.
- Establish, monitor, and enhance internal control frameworks to safeguard company assets and ensure policy and regulatory compliance.
- Review balance sheet account reconciliations across regions, providing oversight, guidance, and implementing best practices to drive consistency.
- Manage the annual external audit process and maintain strong relationships with external auditors.
- Support M&A activities, including purchase price accounting and integration of newly acquired entities.
- Champion process improvements and automation initiatives to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of accounting operations.
- Collaborate with operations, legal and integration teams to align financial reporting with business objectives and deliver strategic insights.
- Develop, mentor, and retain a high-performing accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous learning.
- Stay abreast of evolving accounting standards and regulatory developments, providing technical guidance to senior leadership.
Qualifications
- CPA designation required.
- Strong technical knowledge of ASPE (or IFRS) and experience with consolidation accounting and note disclosure preparation in a multi-entity environment.
- Industry experience in waste management, environmental services, industrial services, or other operations-intensive sectors is preferred.
- Proven experience supporting M&A transactions, including financial integration and policy alignment across acquired entities.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with a track record of building and developing effective accounting teams.
- Experience guiding regional accounting teams, ensuring alignment with corporate standards and delivering hands-on support where needed.
- Proficiency with Sage 300, Sage Enterprise Intelligence, or other mid-market ERP/reporting tools is a strong asset.
- Advanced Excel capabilities, with the ability to build, analyze, and present complex financial data.
- Bilingualism in French and English is considered a strong asset.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, acquisitive environment with competing priorities and evolving requirements.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
