Child and Youth Care Practitioner (12 Month Position)

Starting Wages: $28.20 per hour

The Child and Youth Care Worker under the direction of the Coordinator of Equity and School Support works with assigned students in schools and is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help design and carry out proactive, evidence based programming for students who have social, emotional, and behavior issues. This may include:

  • Working with complex students 6-12 directly in educational settings, identifying services for students who have difficulty coping in school/educational settings.
  • Engaging in, and supporting effective connections and communications between the school, the families and other appropriate community agencies to meet student needs.
  • Working collaboratively with families, administrators, classroom teachers, educational assistants, community based agencies, programs, services and supports.
  • Assisting students to develop social skills and self-regulation through community based, recreation, summer and after school programs.
  • Assist students in reintegration into the school environment following a suspension by participating in return-to-school meetings.
  • Act as a designated safe contact, offering "check and connect" sessions to support students' transitioning back into the school community.
  • Provide restorative opportunities within the school and community to repair relationships and promote accountability.

REQUIREMENTS :



The Child and Youth Care Practitioner will require the completion of a two year Child and Youth Care Practitioner Program or related field. Confirmation of your educational qualifications must be included with your application.


  • Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Membership in the Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care Workers’ Association is an asset.
  • The ability to establish proactive relationships with and provide appropriate supports/interventions for vulnerable children and youth impacted by developmental trauma and or behavioral, social emotional and mental health challenges.
  • The ability to apply evidence informed supports/interventions related to social emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • The ability to collaboratively program plan to support academic, behavior and social-emotional success for students.
  • The ability to apply effective mediation and conflict resolution strategies.
  • The ability to work effectively in flexible work situations; i.e. visit homes when required to provide the link between the school and the home to support student success; accompany students on community outings, work sites and other sites as outlined in the student's plan.
  • The ability to utilize current technologies to support students experiencing self-regulation and communication challenges.
  • The ability to work & communicate effectively with students.
  • The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality expectations.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with teachers, educational assistants, administrators, specialists and others to support the implementation of appropriate interventions and programming for assigned students.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Current First Aid and CPR.
  • Current Nonviolent crisis intervention.
