ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Manager of Day Treatment, the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) is an integral part of the Day Treatment Program. The Child and Youth Worker provides support and works closely with program classroom teachers and the broader CYW team to maintain a therapeutic environment that supports students with their academic, social and emotional needs. The primary focus of this role will be to foster self-esteem, social skills, support dysregulated behaviours and build meaningful relationships. The CYW will work directly with school board personnel and families to ensure timely and professional communication and treatment planning.

Employment Status: Full-Time Contract

Contract Duration: September 8, 2025 to June 26, 2026

Location: 11225 Leslie Street, this position will require travel within York Region.

Hours of Work: Thirty-five (35) hours per week.

Salary Range: $56,014 to $58,323

A LOOK AT YOUR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively develops positive rapport with clients in the program to create psychological safety and trust through relationship-building activities and observation of the client’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of a therapeutic classroom environment, including the integration of curriculum requirements and mental health needs.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to facilitate the assessment and treatment needs of individual students as assigned for case management.
  • Engage in communication with caregivers to provide support and ensure effective treatment implementation.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of each student, including being knowledgeable of all school-based safety procedures such as fire safety, lock down procedures and the duty to report.
  • Implement behavioural and crisis interventions strategies as guided by safety and emotional needs and individual treatment plans.
  • Facilitate therapeutic groups within the day treatment setting addressing a variety of topics.
  • Effectively supports and administers all medications and medical issues required pertaining to each student and access medical resources as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care or related discipline and/or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • A minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of field experience.
  • Knowledge of child and youth mental health legislation and regulations, including knowledge of mental health barriers, behaviours and supports required to effectively support children and youth.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including editing skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to liaison and build positive relationships with agency internal services, clients and external partners.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound decision-making in an intensive environment.
  • Exhibits strong observation and attention to detail skills related to client mental status, crisis prevention and in-moment client needs.
  • Competent in trauma-informed practice, child development, and child and youth care relational practice.
  • Employs emotional intelligence to manage and co-regulate self and client during intensive situations.
  • Demonstrate versatility in the ability to work independently and collaboratively to support agency and program goals.
  • Competence in modelling professionalism and maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational, solution-based problem-solving and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in crisis situations.
  • Functional technological skills (e.g., Office 365, MS Office, SharePoint, software applications).
  • Awareness and appreciation for the dynamics of equity issues (diversity, equity and inclusion), especially as it relates to gender, ethnicity, race, and economic status.
  • Identification with the strategic mission, vision and values of the organization including inclusion, collaboration, people centred, knowledgeable and courageous.
  • Driver’s license and clear driver’s abstract, including proof of automobile insurance

  • Applicants with fluency in another language are encouraged to apply.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)

ON-BOARDING REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Vulnerable Sector Screening Check (within the last 180 days).
  • First Aid Certification (CPR/AED Level C).
  • Formal Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable motor vehicle.
  • Completion of a Driver’s Abstract.
  • Proof of automobile insurance.
