Board Director (Volunteer/Unpaid)
Tipi of Hope Foundation is an Indigenous-founded and led Registered Charity based in Calgary. With the support of volunteer Board Members, we provide a path for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to create a joint vision of reconciliation. We work collaboratively with all Indigenous peoples, communities, organizations, and groups to ensure meaningful action.
The Role
As a volunteer Board Director, you will be responsible for actively participating in effective governance, working with management to develop long-term strategic plans, and providing governance oversight for managing the business and affairs of the Tipi of Hope Foundation (Tipi of Hope).
What we’re looking for
Tipi of Hope seeks to develop a board whose members possess and demonstrate a strategic combination of personal attributes, expertise, emotional intelligence, competencies, and occupational backgrounds. The board strives to be diverse in cultures and communities, experiences, perspectives, knowledge, connections, and skills to carry out its governance, planning, stewardship, and advocacy functions. As an Indigenous-founded and led Charity, we strive for 80% Indigenous representation on our Board, and we are currently represented by 83% participation.
What you bring
- As a Director, you must attend seven meetings and one annual general meeting per year. Board members may be required to attend additional Board meetings to address emerging issues and are expected to support one program, which will require some additional time, varying from month to month depending on the activities being carried on at the time. In total, the commitment is a minimum of 4 hours per month.
- Board members are elected to serve a two-year term. We are actively seeking one additional member but are open to recruiting three additional members.
- Based on our most recent skills matrix review, candidates demonstrating expertise in one or more of the following areas will be preferred for the upcoming board appointments: policing/justice, accounting/finance, legal/corporate secretary, fundraising, website design, social media, or programs.
- Candidates should bring a record of strategic leadership in organizationally complex environments, experience serving on a non-profit, charitable, public sector or corporate Board, and a strong reputation for integrity and effective decision-making.
- Familiarity with cloud-based file-sharing services for easy document distribution (e.g., Google Drive) is preferred but can be easily taught.
Why Volunteer?
- This opportunity allows qualified individuals to contribute to the community through the Tipi of Hope’s commitment to Indigenous peoples and advancing reconciliation. You will apply your time, skills, and interest in the community toward an important cause while gaining experience in governance and learning about a part of our community to which you may not have regular exposure.
- In compliance with our Board Insurance, a Criminal background check will be required. This will be obtained at the applicant’s expense.
Additional Information
- All Volunteers come from diverse backgrounds but share many common traits and skills. They are committed to the vision, mission and values of Tipi of Hope and are willing to be ambassadors of the Tipi of Hope in the community.
- Our recruitment process aims to lead with Indigenous Values. With this in mind, we lead by building awareness, increasing understanding, and cultivating trust to create a shared vision. It is about recognizing that we are all connected and can build a future based on a foundation of knowledge, inclusion, and acceptance. Preference may be given to a candidate who identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis), and we encourage you to self-identify in your application.
- All positions are remote anywhere in Canada, and you must have a computer with a strong internet connection to attend meetings. All positions are exempt from pay, compensation, bonuses, stipends or any form of financial compensation.
